I have a 2002 v6 firebird with only 16000 miles on it. Tonight my car would heat up to 250, then fluctuate in that temp for about 5 min then it would go back to normal. But then the whole cycle started over again. My heater also would stop working then start working again. Finally my engine actually reached 270 and it just stopped. I also heard an occasional popping noise from the engine. My gf put premium gas in my tank about a week earlier, but at the time i was running on regular. I also have the wings west front air dam. But i dont think those things could cause my problem. Please, please, please, any input would be greatly appreciated.

 

Start with the basics.

Check coolant level. If its low, add coolant and watch temp gauge.
Check to make sure the bottom spoiler, not the trim spoiler but the very low air spoiler mounted to the lower chassis is in place, and is not hanging or missing bolts. This is a very common problem on Fbodies. You tear the spoiler off, or it has bolts missing and it does not give a good charge of cool air to your radiator. This will cause overheating while driving, then the car will cool down at idle, due to the electric fans cooling the motor.

Are the fans properly running? Do you have enough coolant? Is your radiator free of debris, and buildup? Do you have air bubbles in your coolant while the car is running? Your gonna have to do some detective work, as there are dozens of potential causes of a car running hot.

What is the Wings West Air Dam? Is it a front ground effects? Or does it mount undernearth the car?

There is an air dam underneath all F-bodies to pick up air for the radiator. If you put on ground effects,you need a lower air dam.

 

This sounds like a low coolant issue. You would definantly need to check your coolant level and if low find your leak.
