Re: rpm cuts off at 4000!
Just went through this on my 2000 3.8
FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
Check all the wires, make sure they arent cracked, if you haven't changed your wires or plugs in 50,000 miles change them all.
I had to change an ignition coil and all the wires and plugs, still stumbled around and cut off at 4000rpm
I then changed the fuel filter and it fixed the stumble, still cut off at 4000
It ended up being a bad cat, see if the exhaust smells funny or if you hear a rattling coming from under the passenger side, also if your exhaust feels colder and the engine warmer than normal thats a sign too.
Got the cat replaced today (literally) and I have no more stumbles, codes or cut off at 4000rpm
John

Re: rpm cuts off at 4000!
in our cars, rough running like you describe is usually due to bad plug wires. get a decent set of 7.5mm or 8mm wires and prepare to cut your knuckles. wires are a damn b1tch to swap.
hope that helps.
oh, and if you find any metal shrouds or shields on the plug caps when you remove the old wires, be sure to put them on the new wires when you install. or you might have to go through this mess in another year or so.

I don't know if you fixed your problem yet knowing that you posted this a while ago. I was having the same symptoms as you. I brought my car to a mechanic to get a diagnosis. Came back and they said my cat was literally falling apart inside therefore clogging it up. I was able to have my cat replaced for free by a local chevy dealer because the mechanic i brought it to said that chevy has or had some kind of warranty for the cat itself if your car has less than 70,000miles on it. I called up the dealership just to confirm, and the mechanic was right. So I saved around $500-$700. Got my car back a couple days later, whoa was I happy!!!
