Rear End Gears Racing/Performance
Rear End Gears Racing/Performance
I was reading the mods that most of the f-bodies have on their cars. I have noticed that many people change the gearing in the rear end to give them a better low and and quarter mile time. I have heard the 3.08's are weak and thats what I think I have in my stock 1994 V6 Camaro. I know of the 3.23's, 3.42's, and 3.73's. What would be the best gearing to put in the rear end as far as lowering quarter mile times?? the 3.42's and 3.73's seem like popular choices for the f-body owners. Also, where could I buy them and around how much would they retail for? Thanks, I appreciate the help.
if you have an auto, then more than likely you have the 3.08;s. check your RPO code in the door. GU4= 3.08 GU5 = 3.23 GU6 = 3.42
the 3.42's are probably the best all round setup. they will get you out of the hole quicker and not comprimise much top end. 3.73s are a bit too low, though it would make sense for them to give you better 1/4 times, the fastest f-bodies, the guys with power adders always went back to 3.23s or 3.42s to achieve them.
you can get the gears from almost any online fbody site. check the sponsors of this site. I would recommend www.thunderrancing.com or www.ammperformance.com since I have ordered from them and made out really well.
I would go with Motive gears. They will run about $200. you will need an install kit... get the full kit to replace your bearings while you are at it. another $120 then you are gong to want to switch in a take off posi unit, otherwise you are just spinning one tire harder. another $100. you will also need an SLP reluctor ring to keep your ABS operational. $15. you also need rear end fluid. im not counting that. Last, you will need someone who knoes what they are doing to install the gears. Its tricky and very precise or you will ruin the new set you are putting in... I would not recommend taking this on yourself AT ALL. Tack on another $300 for install.
Plan on about 7-800 for a rear-end rebuild with the gear you want. Its a pricey mod, but definately one of them ost worthwhile.

If you change gears, your speedometer and shift changes (if an automatic) will be off...
The cheap fix is to get the pcm flashed with the vin of a similar car that came with the gear ratio you end up installing, the same year. 3.73's weren't in any of these cars from the factory, so that's not an option if you go with 3.73 gears. I've given my vin out to a couple of '98 people who switched to 3.42 gears.
Some people try the JET unit to recalibrate the speedo and shift changes, but I hear as many horror stories (if not more) than success stories.
Reprogramming the pcm is a possibility, if you can find someone who can do it. ASE (Super Chips) might do it. Not sure if anybody else can or not.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have an M5(I didnt mention it in the first post I made) so I dont know how much of a difference that would make. I will check my stock gearing, but that mod is a little out of my price range right now. I wouldnt install it myself anyways because I dont know that much about it. Anyways I will keep that in mind for the future if and when I get some extra money. Thanks again.
I would go with 3.73 gears, they would kind hurt gas milage.
Or you could do it for cheap and get a used 3.42 rear, you would also have good top speed for when your on the interstate.
I have a 3.42 on my V6 and I want to keep them and ad the zexal-torsen LSD as soon as I can find some one that can do it.
