Performance Chips

Performance Chips
Hey guys i was searching a bit on ebay for a performance chip for my "96 Camaro 3.8L and I found a bunch for pretty cheap. What they said they did was "trick" the engine into thinking it is taking in cold air so it ups the horsepower. Have any of you bought these or heard about these? Will it mess up my engine or does it really increase performance? Thanks for the help.

Re: Performance Chips
I've explained chips many times and even state in forum on my site don't bother with chips on ebay. That one is not a chip also it is a 47 cent resistor from radio shack and is no good and can lose performance. Don't get fooled by stupid ebay claims of 20+hp by a chip or even cheap intake and there supposed super chargers that are just electric fans. This should be stickied.

Re: Performance Chips
For shats and giggles i bought one of those miracle chips...its only a little resistor that you can buy 5 of at any radio shack for 25 cents. I thought wth and put it in. I did notice a very trace difference but shortly thereafter i threw the SES light. Took it back out and havent messed with it since. If they hadnt sent me a free how-to cd with a bunch of mods Id have requested my money back. Really truly not worth it!

Re: Performance Chips
Hey guys thanks for the info. I definately won't be buying one. However, now that we're on the topic, is there any sort of computer chip or programmer that increases hp that i can get?

Re: Performance Chips
There's a couple of different things:
Jet Chips - they're not really worth the money according to most people, only good thing I've heard is they increase the shift firmness in autos
Hypertech programmer - a few hundred bucks but you can personally change different settings for your car - rev limiter, adjust for gear changes, etc.
Custom Tuning - probably the best bang for your buck, send it to pcmforless or texasspeed and have your pcm tuned specifically for your car and what mods you have
and definately stay far away from the "chips" on ebay. Just go to radio shack and buy a $3 resistor that does the same thing.
