Oil Pressure Problem.

alright when I first start the car, the Oil pressure is kinda high.. well after the engine temp warms it drops to about the first mark on the guage.. a little while after that and I start getting problems it sure when you give it gas it raises up some and drops when you let off taht is normal right? but after that It seems to want to fall if you stop somewhere it dips into the red and the check guages light comes on! car will then stutter and then die..

I have a Brand New Oil sending unit! im gonna change that.. Im thinking if that isnt it then its the Oil Pump Gear thing. (their is no Oil Pump or so GM told me) because their are these gears that sit in behind the plate and turn the oil through the engine..

what could this be? anyone know?

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

yeah, thts normal, I start up its going to be high, and once u drive it a little and everything gets warm, its going to set really low untill you increase the rpms, then it should go up on the gauge a little. Its normal, dont worry about it. If its anything its the oilasending unit, but like i said every camaro i saw does that. (now that i said that im sure this is going to be mobbed with posters saying how theres doesnt do that, like the exhuast doesnt sound ricey over 3k...)

no their is a point after it warms up fully to where it just drops into the red.. and the car shuts off.

I know its perfeclty normal for it to drop and raise with the gas/RPM but when I stop or let of the gas it will dip into the red and kill out!

why is it doing that!?

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

Yeah, the newest problem is that after its warmed up.. now that when driving, the car starts to studder and jerk because its not getting no oil..

GM told me they dont have OIL pumps just a OIL GEAR.. and that turns the oil through the engine. well tough **** because mine is apperently stopping working. its about gotta be the thing I gotta fix..

do you know of the best way I can find a leak in my Coolant system.. somewhere from the radiator to the engine is all I know.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

If you're worried that your oil is leaking into your cooling system, you can just pop the radiator cap (do this when the engine is cold) and if there is a leak, your coolant will be all sludgy, and your coolant jug will most likely be full of oil. I don't understand what kind of leak you're looking for between the radiator and the engine. The only thing between those two is hoses.

I was also wondering if your engine gets hot. Lack of lubrication usually leads to the engine heating up pretty badly.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

how long have you had your car? Has it ever got really hot before?? Can you tell if it may have any blow-by? Sounds like this could be something major...

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

what does your oil look like? It almost sounds to me like you have a blown head gasket. this would explain where your coolant is going and might explain what is going on with the oil pressure. If the oil looks like dirty mayo then you have a problem.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

I am having the same problem. This weekend I replaced my rear main oil seal and housing. Put everything back together and fired it up. I got what appeared to be white smoke/vapor out the tailpipes and with the engine running I removed the oil dipstick and got white vapor out that too. But after awhile I no longer have it. But my oil pressure is low like the other people on this thread. I have 134k mileage and the pressure has always been around the 60lb mark. It would go up with exceleration. Now it sits at the first white mark on the gauge and drops after its warmed up. It'll will stick go up when excelerating, but also drops really low while sitting at idle. I changed the oil when I did the oil seal R/R and thought maybe I put too much so I changed it again at Instant oil change. Its been a day and a 1/2 and no white vapor again.

PLEASE PLEASE tell me I didnt somehow blow a headgasket.

well, usually a head gasket doesnt just blow for no reason... is there a REASON you may have a blown gasket? Racing...high high rpm's or somthing?

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

You will blow a head gasket if there is no coolant running through the engine, I don't think racing the engine would be the problem unless you were low on coolant when you were racing it. The temp guage could clue you in on that (running hot) . You need to find a mechanic or a friend who is a good mechanic and heve them look at it. in my 92 RS I had a bad oil sending unit but I NEVER had any problems with low oil pressure from it.

Re: Oil Pressure Problem.

Well I found out why I have been having low oil pressure. When I replaced my rear main oil seal I also replaced the housing. When I installed the gasket for the housing, it had to go a certain way, guess what I did. The wrong friekin way :-( well what happens is that it blocks the oil passages on the housing and oil cannot get up into the upper block. Oil gets backed up at the oil pump. I now have to take it to the shop and have them change the gasket and I ask all of you to pray that I didnt damage my engine.
