Regular oil filter (PF-47 or equiv) = 4.5 quarts

Oversized oil filter (PF-52) = A little under 5 quarts

I run an oversized UPF-52 (AC Delco Gold) so I can use the whole 5-quart jug of M1.

I run the regular size filter, and i always have about half a quart left over, which i use for the next change, to pour some clean oil in after the old oil drains.

Shouldnt you be using the recomended SAE 5w-30 thats what i have always used.

The 3.8L engine recomends 10w-30. Says it right on the oil cap.

I'd think 10-40 is too thin, but whatever floats your boat

Is it really okay to run a larger size filter on our engines (provided that we add more oil to accomodate?) If so, is it like one for a Z28 or something?

I use the PF-52, I think its for a Chevy Blazer. It works fine and the larger filter allows for better filtering

10w-40 would actually be on the thicker side, thicker than recommended. You really shouldn't have a need to run anything other than 10w-30 though I use 5w-30 during the winter months and 10w-30 the rest of the year. I wouldn't recommend the thicker 10w-40 unless you have some specific need for it. No use making the engine work harder to pump the thicker oil.

The larger filter that some of us run are for the GM trucks, like the Trailblazer as said. It is perfectly fine and a lot of people use them. Just think of the oil filter catching all the crud...bigger filter means more filter area to catch the crud. That and it allows you to use (more or less) five quarts instead of 4 1/2.

BTW, different oil filter from the Zs.

5 Quart Questions For 3.8s

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but...

If you use an oversized filter are you putting all 5 quarts in or holding back a little?

Does using a larger filter make the oil pump work harder?

Is the built in bypass valve on the filter the same (oversized vs. oem)?

Thanks
