Re: o2 sensors on a 97 camaro...SES light
The 1997 V6 engine has 4 sensors!
one in each "header", one before and one after the cat......
but downstream O2 sensor bad????
I think it is the one befor the cat, but I'm not 100% sure.
have you the original error code? It's like P01xx .....

Re: o2 sensors on a 97 camaro...SES light
"downstream" should be after-cat sensor. It isn't affecting anything at all - it's for emissions control only. You may disregard this code
If you will be changing it, go with delcos, bosch sucks.

Re: o2 sensors on a 97 camaro...SES light
Or you can do what i did buy a simulator and knock the cat out =-)
Bones
P.S. you can keep the cat on also but a sumulator is around $20 alot cheaper that a 02 sensor and there easy to install anyone who understands a volt-meter can

Re: o2 sensors on a 97 camaro...SES light
Likely, the O2 sensor is not bad, but you have some other issue going on that is causing a lean or rich sensor reading to appear--of which many causes there are for such events. More often than not, O2's get replaced....because people like tossing money at parts, I suppose.
Of course, no code = no help in any case.

Re: o2 sensors on a 97 camaro...SES light
well I took it back to AZ...then I wrote down the code but forgot it ....its on a piece of paper...anyways, it said (bank 1 sensor 2)....I had the guy clear the code for me...and told him i would buy the sensor later since it was $70
the SES light has not come on since!....beats me!!....
