Need Help

My sister has a 95 camaro v6 3400.
Well...the damn thing started running rough so we replaced the plugs, wires, air filter, and fuel filter.
The damn thing still doesnt run right. It feels like the thing is misfiring or something. But I have checked and rechecked all plugs and wires.
It has a check engine light and it came up as the egr unit. SO we replaced that whole thing which was like 150 bucks....and it still doesnt run right

I have no clue what in the heck could be wrong...even checked the thing in the dark to look for sparking or arching...nothing.

Any ideas?

Re: Need Help

After running it for a bit, check the catalytic converter. If its clogged itll turn orange from all the heat. You might have them recheck the OBD II, and dont go to Autozone. Theyre cheap reader only shows one code when it could be throwing several.

Re: Need Help

The scanner showed several. We used a good one at advance auto. The scanner would not read the codes until he powered up the computer in the car.
I didnt think this was normal...could this mean something? Weve never had to do that before.
The other codes said somethin about spark control. But that was covered with the egr unit supposedly.
I dont think it is the converter.
So im still lost.
My LS1 is a lot simpler than this damn thing.

Re: Need Help

the same exact thing is happening with my 95 3.4L!!! I replaced my egr valve as well and its still running real crappy and now it occassionally stalls out while I'm driving (starts up right away though).. could it maybe be the coil pack?

Re: Need Help

I checked all of them on my sisters car.
Pulled the wires one at a time off of each coil and they were all sparking real good.
Yeah it runs like crap though...doesnt stall...but the thing couldnt beat a damn 1980 civic. sounds like its giving everything its got but takes about 20 seconds to get to 60.
The car will shake pretty bad for like 4 or 5 seconds...stop for about 30 seconds and do it again. This is when driving at 55. It has just a minor miss when idling.

Re: Need Help

how many miles are on it, and has the cat ever been replaced? you probably are smart enough to know when a cat is going bad, so im not gonna explain it to you haha.

is she getting any misfire codes? our cars have really stupid coil pack/icm systems that are really touchy.

Re: Need Help

No...no misfire codes.
A couple came up that said something about spark control or something...but that was supposed to be caused from the egr. Also tried replacing some kind of ignition module. That didnt fix it.
Speaking of the stupid coil pack thing. you can switch the wires around on the thing and it still runs the same
Has the same kind of miss. Seems like the thing would run even worse when that is done...or not at all.

Re: Need Help

that means he has wires crossed somewhere. i accidentally crossed 2 wires cuz i thought it went 1 3 5 but it goes 1 5 3 and when i had them crossed it seemed to idle fine just little hiccup but when i gave it gas it was crappy, then i noticed oops wires crossed.

Re: Need Help

you CANNOT switch the wires and have it run the same, i know that for a fact. they are cylender specific. try to find a firing diagram online, with the block cyl numbers and the coil pack cyl numbers, and go from there. my guess now is that there are some wires switches somewhere, by someone who did it wrong, and you are just assuming that they were on in the right order.

Re: Need Help

That was the first thing that i did. I have a 93-00 camaro haynes manual.
Checked the order like 5 times. Everything is perfect.
I switched a couple wires on the coil pack and it still ran the same...dont ask me how...but it did.

Re: Need Help

it depends which ones you switch car will run but it will miss badly and def not a way to run the car. get the coils checked if you are sure all the wires are in right.

Re: Need Help

you said you replaced the ICM (common thing that needs to be replaced), but did you actually replace the coil packs themselves?

Re: Need Help

Tried replacing 1 coil pack at a time.
This made no difference.
With the wires off of each coil you can see plenty of spark flying as well.
