Post My camaro is overheating at highway only.

It over heats when im riding over 70 for a while.... tempeture just starts going up if I dont slow down it will over heat bad.... Its a 94 3.4 . I changed the water pump and thermostat... Could it be that maybe the radiator needs cleaning? It also smokes when I turn it on. Just when I turn it on ... Oil looks ok any one have an idea of what might be causing these problems?

How's your oil pressure? When was the oil changed last?

Re: My camaro is overheating at highway only.

If its a 94, and you have the Dexcool in it (orange coolant), and someone topped it off with a little tap water, your system is dicked. Someone did that with my car and when i got it, i pulled the radiator fluid dipstick in the overflow tank, and it was covered in this orange clay stuff. Inside of the radiator looked the same.

Youll have to flush the block and radiator and tank many many times in a row to get all the crap out. I flushed each about 7 times using my hose, then filled it with green coolant, and it works fine now.

So yea, probably, its either your coolant is sludged up, or you have a really dirty radiator.

Re: My camaro is overheating at highway only.

Fan works , I just bought the motor like 3 weeks ago.. Oil got changed 4 months ago and it looks good. Ive never used dexcool so that cant be it. Water in radiator is super dirty brownish.. I flushed it once and its still brownish... Im going to try flushing it several times like you said hedzilla and them im going to add some green coolant and see how it works... Im doing a swap soon like in 2 months going to put in a v8 but I have to drive what I have for now....

Ruben
Thanks for responding....

Get under the car and make sure there isn't a plastic bag or something blocking the air into the radiator.

If it only overheats at 70 mph - the fans are NOT the problem. Check the plastic airdam to see if it is still there and intact. It needs to be there to direct air up into the radiator when you are at speed. Flush the cooling system until it's clean.....

Re: My camaro is overheating at highway only.

Remember, you have to not only flush the radiator MANY times (I stress this, at least 5 times), you have to flush the overflow box, and the block itself, taking off the thermostat hose. Flush the heater core also. Use a high pressure hose. If ANY of the orange stuff is in the system, and you add green, the same thing will happen again.

Re: My camaro is overheating at highway only.

I just re-read this thread.

A 1994 Camaro shouldn't have DEX-Cool in it. DEX-Cool didn't become factory-fill until 1996.

I don't like DEX-Cool very much. I'd rather use G-05 coolant or the regular green stuff as an alternate.

It sounds more of a radiator problem than a coolant problem but a thorough flush is always good, especially if you were using DEX-Cool.

Well, he said its orange, sounds like dexcool to me. he may have had green, and someone mixed it with dexcool.

Bad posts.

Your fans shut off at speeds. As said before, there is something wrong with the air damn and/or its function. If the car will idle and not overheat it is not a cooling system issue, its an airflow issue.

good posts.

we are shooting out every possible option for him. its obvious that it is an airflow issue somehow, but at higher speeds on the highway, it is possible that if he has a sludge issue in his system, the coolant, which is flowing faster in higher engine rpm's, is not getting to where it should due to a blockage, or its just not getting there fast enough.

That's retarded, you watch too many oil commercials, and are going to end up costing him a fortune with mis-diagnosis. He already bought a pump. The velocity of water through the system at higher speeds is not going to be dramatic enough to cause the system to overheat.
