Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
Hey!
I've been looking into getting a catback for my '97 3.8 Camaro, and I've pretty much boiled it down to buying either a Flowmaster or Magnaflow catback. I just wanted to feedback preferably from people who've seen/had/installed one/both of them. I'm looking for something that will have a nice rumble to it, but not too loud (as in I can't carry a conversation in the car because the exhaust is too loud). Performance wise, I'm not expecting miracles, so whatever will give me the best fuel economy/sound is what I want.
Also, I'm thinking of bypassing or not even installing a catalytic converter. Would that make the car louder/more fuel efficient/more powerful?
Thanks!

Re: Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
well i have a flowmaster with no cat on my 3.4 and it sounds really good for a V6 its pretty dam loud. your gas mileage will be better 1 or 2 extra miles to the gallon with no cat ... i dont know what the flowmaster will do on gas mileage. with the muffler and no cat mod you might get 10 extra HP on 200Hp bone stock at the flywheel of course. BUT if i were you i would get the whole magnaflow exhaust system with no cat.... i think its around 400 dollars tho. 3.4's and 3.8's sound much diff as well
Re: Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
this is all subjective, though, obviously ppl with magnaflow will say 'flowmasters suck' and vice versa...
to be brutally honest, they all sound like crap up high, and all sound good down low... i really don't think there's much difference.....
just get whatever's cheaper...

I have a flowmaster with no cat on my 3.8 and it sounds good and my friend has one on his 3.4 and it sounds good I dont think they flow all that well so if your just looking for sound flowmaster would be good.

Exactly
Because every exhaust will sound "ricey" above 3k, I'd rather have the meanest and loudest exhaust below 3k.
With that said, Flowmaster gets the nod over Magnaflow.
And before anyone gets defensive and says "My exhaust doesn't sound ricey at all!". It does...go next to a V8, pull up to 3k and listen.

Re: Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
Well, I appreciate everyone's input on this, I really do. From what I gather, both systems are a good choice, so I really didn't have a problem buying the Magnaflow system, since my local dealer had a set in stock for $400, and he did not have a Flowmaster. I guess fate decided that one for me.
I'll bypass the cat and see what improvement, if any, I get. My gas mileage sucks bad right now, so even 1-2 mpg is welcome.
Thanks again, guys
