Question Magnaflow exhaust questions

I have a 99 3.8 liter camaro and im looking for a better sound and some extra horsepower. I found a magnaflow exhaust system brand new on ebay for $430.00. Ok so here are my questions.
Is that a good price?
How much of a gain in horsepower could I expect?
How do you think it would sound on a V-6?
And my last question is with purchase they offer either a Free High Flow Catalytic Converter or K&N Air Filter which would be better to get and add more horses?

Re: Magnaflow exhaust questions

No.
10-15hp
good at idle, crappy under load
either one would add a negligable amount of power

The price seems a little high, I bought mine from Summit for alot cheaper then that but then again mine is for the V8 application, not the v6 so maybe that accounts for the price difference, I'm not sure. Overall, the Magnaflow is a very nicely constructed catback. As for the high-flow catalyst or the K&N air filter element, as mentioned above, both will add very little horsepower but if it comes free, then why not. I personally would go with the air filter.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust questions

I found this borla exhaust here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8071494539 but thats alot more than I want to spend and it has 3" tubing and the magnaflow system has 2.5" tubing. Will that make a diffrence sound and performance wise if so what kind of a diffrence and how much. Oh and heres the magnaflow exhaust http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=8070239200 Sorry for all the questions im just lost on what to get and dont want to make a mistake i will regret.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust questions

3" tubing will sound better probably than 2.5" tubing
but 3" tubing isnt as good as 2.5" tubing for power.
our cars dont have enough back pressure for 3" tubing(unless you have like 300rwhp)

Sorry man, you have that backwards.

The 2.5" Magnaflow catback doesn't sound as raspy under load as the 3" system, but it also wouldn't flow as much. For a 3.8 car, you can't go wrong with a 3" exhaust.

If you like the Magnaflow setup, go with the 3" system designed for a 93-95 LT1 car. That's what Little G is running on his car.

Im confused now would the 3" or 2.5" system give me more horsepower? Also if I have them design one for me what muffler do you guys think would be the best to go with and should I get a better catalytic converter to go with the setup?
Sorry for so many questions im just really confused and want to get the best set up I can to gain hp.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust questions

I'm running 3" Magnaflow with high-flow cat on my 93 LT1 and I absolutely love it. Sounds great at idle and under load. Magnaflow is one of the best out there IMO.
I don't know how it would sound on a V6. And as far as 3" or 2.5" giving you more HP, with a V8 the 3" would give more, with a V6 its probably a neglible difference anyway.
If your looking at a Magnaflow cat-back system it will include the muffler. Theres no need to mix and match, a cat-back system is just the tubing and the muffler basically, and tips, so whatever muffler you want just buy the kit. And personally I would recommend Magnaflow.
High-flow cat or CAI? depends. If you plan on actually having a catalytic converter, then high-flow magnaflow is less restrictive than a normal cat, so that would be the way to go. That was my situation. Needed a Cat to get by emissions testing, but didn't want it to effect my HP or sound, High-flow did the job for me. Since I didn't have a cat before, I figured if I was going to have one it might as well be the least restrictive I could find.

Ok heres the deal as you can tell I dont know shi* about exhaust saying that, so it would be better just to tell the exhaust shop to remove my catalytic converter when they install my exhaust system? (I dont have to worry about emission testing) I was asking which muffler because everyone is saying that I should probably just have a custom exhaust made because it would be cheaper and I would pretty much get the same hp gains so I was wondering what would be the best muffler to choose with the custom piping I would get? I was also wondering why they call some systems catback exhaust and others are just exhaust systems whats the diffrence if any at all?
Basicly im looking to get the best performance exhaust I can get for a good price and im trying to find out what combonation would be the best money wise and performance wise any suggestions are welcome.
Again sorry for so many questions I want to learn about exhausts and not make a mistake with which one I get I appreciate everyones help.

Re: Magnaflow exhaust questions

If you have no emissions testing, then you will benifit power-wise by removing the cat. Not sure if your local exhaust shop will remove it for you or not though, since the law says you are still required to have one.

The 3" Magnaflow has much great flow potential than the 2.5" system, so if you decide that you want to mod the car more in the future, it will benefit you more.
