My 97 camaro (V-6) has 140K miles. Does the timing chain need replaced? Has anyone had problems with the timing chain due to high mileage. I know it has a tensioner so does this remedy the old problem of timing chain or gear failure.

Timing belts, as often seen on FWD cars. Can go out around 100,000 miles and usually do. (mine went at 120,000) Taking a few valves with it! (bent 5 out of 6 for me) A timing chain will last a lot longer. Breaking one with stock power is extremely difficult. If anything what usually happens is 'chain-stretch' which will affect your timing, and make the engine run retarded.
When you go to replace it, at the minimum get a double chain. If its in your budget, (are they made?) get a set of Idler gears! Much more accurate than a chain and they won't stretch. Plus, the 'noisy' version will sound like you've got a supercharger (it whines).

You won't have to pull the radiator or condensor to install the timing chain, but you'll have to pull the waterpump, and the crank pulley. If you are thinking about a camshaft swap, that would be a really good time to do it.

 

I don't believe they make gear drive for the 3.8 That would definately be something that SHOULD be manufactured, but unfortunately isn't.
