I think my V6 is getting horrible mileage

I think it getting around 16.7 mpg highway, bone stock. It has a new air filter, and oil was changed within the last 3k miles. I drive 25 miles (50 to and fro) to school and average about 3 gallons for that 50 mile trip.

I was told this is how the gas tank works out to:

ABOVE FULL (full tank): ~15.5 gallons
AT FULL: ~12.5 gallons
AT 3/4: ~9 gallons
AT 1/2: ~6 gallons
AT 1/4: ~4 gallons
AT WARNING/E: ~2.5-3 gallons

Friday I usually fill it up to a hair below the full line, 150 miles later its at the red E.

Thats what usually happens. After about 1/2 a tank, the gas gadge is on empty in about 50 miles. I think our gas tanks are sort of V shaped. The first half of the tank lasts a long time, then after that it goes pretty fast. I usually get about 260 - 280 miles to the tank.

If its a hair below F, then 150 miles is probably about right i think. Usually when the tank is full all the way, the needle goes way above F.

Me to, I usually try to keep it around 2k rpm, and gently leading into it off the light, other cars almost always accelerate faster then me, I drive very smooth.

Maybe theres somethign else wrong with your car. Many things can cause your gas mileage to go down. I think a dirty air filter can, a worn out fuel filter can, and some other things that i can't remember at this time. Maybe someone else knows of some reasons.

Oh and one other thing, if your insurance really is $800 more every 6 months, sell your v6 and buy a v8. Thats what i would do if there was that much of a difference. You could be saving $1600 a year and be driving a more powerful car. That would be $1600 a year you could be spending on modding up your v8

yeah, i'd take a look at the filters, and check the plugs and wires... if you are easy on the 3.4L it tends to get decent mialage

Yesterday I took a look at the filter, seemed new, had a dragonfly and 2 leaves in it, I shook out the filter wiped the airbox and put it back in, then today I think I got about 27-28mpg. My gas guage was a hair or two above 1/2 full, when I got back it was about 40% of the way to 1/4 of a tank, for 50 miles.

The place I bought it from was a toyota dealership, I didn't pay attention to the airbox when I pulled it out, but it has to line up with another pipe or it doesn't get air, its possible they changed the filter and when they put it back in didn't get it lined up, cutting air intake by a lot.

that sounds about right, keep in mind that to caculate your mileage just divide the miles by the gallons that the gas pump reads, don't play games with guessing what's in the tank, eventhough i think the gauges are pretty good, i don't understand why everyone bitches about it, mine works pefectly, i fill up at 1/4 tank and it takes exactly 12 gallons. my mileage has dropped off recently too so i put some fuel system cleaner in and i'm chaning my oil this weekend, the mobil 1 has been in there for 5000 miles so it should knock me back up to around 26 mpg, i do about 40% city driving so it's really pretty good mileage. and the filters always look new just a little wrinkled from moist air, doesn't mean it doesn't need replacing, there only $15 so if your not sure it's always worth changing.

I still want to do a full tune-up, I'm not sure what that includes I want to ask the people over at camarov6.com but my membership is still "pending" for over a week now. I want to just replace everything that normally gets replaced by now so I know for a fact what it has and all, all the filters, fluids, maybe even sensors depending on how much they cost.

On that note, anyone here a member of Camarov6.com/firebirdv6.com how long does it take to get authorized?
