I just bought a 99' 3.8v6
Hey guys, I'm 17 years old and I just bought a 99 v6 Camaro. I traded in my ford taurus with 7k cash to get it. I'm pretty car illiterate, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice to make it perform better, not like a super street racing car, but something just too give it a little more power. I was thinking about installing the 80's series muffler and 2 tail pipes for better exhaust and it would look cooler.
But I've decided not to do anythign until i speak to some people who know what they are talking about, and from what I've read, you guys really know what your talking about lol. If your wondering why I bought the camaro in the first place, it was because i've always loved the look of camaro's, and i passed up a z28 only because i travel back and forth to school and friends houses and work, so i don't wanna spend alot on gas.
So if anyone has any suggestions for a beginner on what to do with a 99 v6, could you please tell me?
thank you for reading
Btw, Sorry if this topic isn't related to this forum, all the other forum names were like a different language to me lol so i posted here.

Re: I just bought a 99' 3.8v6
Welcome
I would get SLP CAI, air filter of your choice, and Whisper lid combo for starters to compliment the exhaust setup you plan. Then from there depending on your spending limit, you could get headers and so forth. Good luck.

Welcome to the fbody world. I'm sure you will enjoy your new camaro. Exhaust and CAI will definantly help and make it sound better. It seems like you really don't want alot of power/speed, so you can stick with the basic bolt ons. I'll tell you though, more than likely you'll "outgrow" the v6 power, and end up wanting a v8. My car started out as a RS, but ended up doing an LT1 swap 2 years after buying it. You should also check out this camaro v6 site if you havent yet. Awsome site. http://www.firebirdv6.com/ Good luck.
nothingeined thanks for telling me that, helps alot =]
btw how much would an engine swap be from my v6 to like a z28 engine ? I don't plan on doing it anytime soon, but just out of curiosity would you happen to know?
oh and is that a good idea to add those flowmaster 80's serie muffler and tailpipes?

Re: I just bought a 99' 3.8v6
I paid almost $3k for everything, 30k mile drivetrain same year as my car, Labor, header install, gear install, High Stall Torque Converter install, and odds and end here and there. You should check on gears also for your car if you have 3.08's now. 3.42's or 3.73's will definantly wake your car up. As far as the flowmaster muffler goes, I've heard some bad things about it on stock v6 cars, expecially using the stock cat. But I just bought a flowmaster muffler for my durango, but haven't put it in yet, so who knows. You can do a search on this as well to help answer some of your questions. That would be your best bet. I went with a borla exhaust from the start. I've heard good things about magnaflow, sounds good and pretty inexpensive.
Re: I just bought a 99' 3.8v6
If everything is stock, exhaust wise I would go with Dynomax Super Turbo
It is not too loud, but has a nice grumble. And if it is an auto, you won't have to worry about rasp since you really never reach the higher RPMs as you would in an manual. Magnaflow
If it is just the muffler, please don't. My friend has one his 99 V6, and well.....to each there own. Dynomax gives that performance jump, but gives the least sound over stock. Flowmaster is bit common and it sounds too light. There is some guy that drives by everyday in his v6 (3.4) and punches it all the time if he sees me (race pending with that guy if I ever am in my car) it sounds pretty bad too. Don't know what series it is since they have different ones, but most people go with the 80 series. Have not heard the Borla yet. Heard it sounds good though

Turbo? Sounds cool, maybe I won't even consider an engine swap if this works out. Who needs z28's anyway's :P
How much is turbo and how do i convince my parents that turbo isn't dangerous >< remember im still 17 lol. They're gonna hear turbo and be like AW HELL NO
Either way, I really like the idea of adding turbo
oh and btw would that turbo be able to beat a oldsmobile aurora with a v8 engine and a stock supercharger that he says only has 15 HP? lol sounds like a random question, but i got some ******* at my school who keeps bragging that he beats mustangs and celica's and all these other pimped out rides and i was just wonderin if that turbo could beat his.

Congrads!
I was 18 when I bought mine, 21 now, almost owned it 3 years!
I changed the intake to a wisper lid and added a K&N filter right away, it made it sound a bit more muscular and about a year later I added the Borla exhaust.
I've had people try to talk me into a supercharger but it's a Daily driver and I depend on it too much now to be doing anything too entailing to it. it's your call if you want to go that route.
