To answer your question, it depends: Do you want the 305 TBI? 305 TPI? 350 TPI? After deciding that, look up prices on the engine, transmission, crossmember, tranny crossmember, computer, wiring harness, front suspension, rear end, etc.
It can be as expensive or cheap as you want it, but it shouldn't cost you 5500 regardless. For that price you can find a higher mileage LS1 setup...

If I were you, I would save your money.... Maybe spending a little bit to get your exterior / sound system they way you want it... Then once your 6 cylinder engine starts to go out drop down a big 350.

Re: How much does it cost to convert a v6 to a v8?
I just did a V8 swap in my 88, I had the motor carb, dist, and headers that came in a Trans Am that I bought for the body, so that didn't cost anything, I payed $400 for a rebuilt T5, bellhousing, and flywheel, $120 for a new clutch kit One of the junkyards I go to has all you can carry for $50 every weekend so I got a mint nose with spoiler off a 89 Z28 turned it upside down and filled it with all the motor mounts, coil springs, acessories, and brackets from a V8 car and about another $60 for gaskets and fluids. So about $630 for me. I still have to replace the exhaust as the car is way too quiet with the stock V6 dual system but it was worth it

It cost me $3k total for a 97 LT1 w/ 20k miles dropped into my 97Rs vert. Price includes labor for the intall, plus intall of 3.73 gears, LT headers, High stall Tc, and some other odds and ends here and there. If you really love your car, as I do, then it's worth the swap if you can find a good deal. I bought a wrecked 97 z28 with 20k miles on it. Everything I needed was there, motor, tranny, gauges, crossmember etc. The labor was $1.5k for everything which I think was real good for what all they did.

V6 cars are practically v8s, nothing needs changing except the wiring, motor mounts and springs and gauge cluster. I did my swap for $3k thats buying headers and other goodies. Did the work myself, 95 lt1 and t56 was 2000.

Re: How much does it cost to convert a v6 to a v8?
Difficulty of the actual motor, 1, being super easy. Only modification I had to do was move the brake lines back a little on the kmember (they use clips and the holes are already there) and put v8 motor mounts on. Also had to heat up the crossmember and bang a dent into it to clear the AC compressor, other than that, drops right in like a small block chevy. The t-56 I had to cut about 1/2 " off my shifter hole (I had a t-5) to accomodate for the shifter that took 10 minutes with a dremel get a aftermarket crossmember and thats done. The wiring was a pain in the butt, that took me a week working a full time job and having a wife and son to take care of. Looking back I could swap in a lt1 into a thirdgen v6 again in about 3 days total. That doesn't include the exhaust, need to hit an exhaust shop. It was easy and cheap. For all the people saying dont go v8 from a v6, they don't know a lot, these cars are practically identical to v8's besides the motor mounts, wiring and suspension. Even the fuel pump is the same on the v6's. So unless you've done it and have actual costs to show, don't bother to speak up.
Should be exactly the same for the fourthgen except you don't have to clear the AC, you guys use the same crossmember.
