help w/ coil selection please!!!
help w/ coil selection please!!!
I drive a 93 3.4 w/149000 miles. I have a bad miss at any rpm and stalls when idleing. I replaced the plugs/wires and O2 sensors. I got the best plugs and wires autozone had. I believe the next thing that i should replace is the coils(how many, 6 right/what brand). If I am wrong please correct me. I searched this site and looked at msd web site but i dont know what to get they have like 15 different kinds. Can u give me an exact name and/or part # and i need 6 coils right. I am looking to get someting at least compareable to stock maybe a litle better as my only mod is k&n fipk and it doesn't have to be msd. I know that i have a distributorless ignition. My car has been in the family since new but my dad(owner before me) doesnt know what was ever done to the car, so for all i know these are the original coils. And soneone on camarov6.com said that if the coils dont fix it then I may have a bad Ignition Control Module
Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
MSD, Jegs and AC Delco I think are all good but you wont see a difference unless you get a whole ignition system like msd dis 4 I think it is. So you should be just fine on going to autozone or whatever and getting the right ones for the car. Just remember the plug locations if you don't have a manual.
Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
You should be able to take your 3 coils, and your ICM into your local Napa and have them test it for you. Stick with AC Delco replacements, they are more than adequate for your car.

Aftermarket coils will just cost more, and won't provide any gain for you.
Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
went to napa and they said that they cant test the coils or ICM but maybe a mechanic can. I have a multimeter(know very little on how to work it but i'm not an idiot) is there a way that I can test them myself seeing as the msd's are only $7 more at http://www.ftpp.net/V6Main.htm can get this part # MSD-8224 Desc. MSD Blaster Replacement 2-Tower Coil - 1993-2002 Camaro/Firebird 3 required and later on if i want i can get the dis-4 and not have to replace the coils because the msd's are only $7 more each. Also what is MSD-8870 MSD GM Coil Interface Module 3 required is this the same as the Ignition Control Module but it is just from MSD because camarov6.com said that if the ciols dont fix it then it is probably the ICM.
Thanks for the help so far

Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
The way to test icm is to remove one coil at a time and connect a 12v tester light to the 2 prongs and turn the key and it should flash really fast, if not then its the icm, but if they all flash fast then it could be a bad coil. You can go for msd so you don't have to later but I don't think you will see a difference til you get dis 4 though.
Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
On a stock or lightly modded car, a full MSD ignition (wires, coils, DIS4, etc) won't add more than a couple hp....not worth it in my opinion. I wouldn't think of any aftermarket ignition parts until you start in with a poweradder.

Re: help w/ coil selection please!!!
i just ordered the msd coils a few days ago and they should be here tomorrow. I figured they cost about $6 more each so i might as well do it now. I checked up on my post to late so I didnt read how to test the icm so I will test it when i put the new coils on. I also have noticed thet it starts to miss really bad once the car warms up and I dont even notice it when it is cold.

Mine was doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Everytime the car go up to operating temp it would cutout a lot. I put some new plug wires on and it fixed it.
