Few Questions on Gears

Alright, I have a '98 Camaro with the 3.8 and 4SA transmission. I want to gear my car to be quicker, so which gears should I use? Also, what's a good site for these gears, what's a normal price, and how would I install them? Thanks, guys!

Depends what you want to do with car. If you just want an extra kick without wasting more gas get 3.23 your going to do some racing but mainly want street get 3.42 you want to really race it and dont care about the little loss in gas mileage get 3.73. You can probably try http://www.lmperformance.com/

Did your car come stock with one exhaust tip or two? If it had two, then your car should have the Y87 package, which would give you a posi and 3.42 gears. If not, then you should have an open 3.08 rear. Either way, if you are going to do a gear swap for performance, then 3.73 or 4.10 should be your only options. Spending the money to go to a 3.42 just doesn't seem worth it.

Before you decide, look at your combo. What other mods do you have, or are you planning? What type of driving/racing do you do?

Re: Few Questions on Gears

your car has stock 3.08 gears... that means u have a 2 series carrier... so when u order gears make sure u order for a 2 series carrier (3.08 and under 2 series... 3.23 and up 3 series) and for a 7.5/7.625 GM 10 bolt rear end.......

i use to have Rishmond3.73's in my 3.4 and i destroyed them.... now i have Motive 3.42's i got from Thunder Racing..... u should look into a LSD for it too.. my Auburn LSD is wicked

Re: Few Questions on Gears

you can also change the carrier. just means you have to get a carrier to go with you gears -- VERY GOOD IDEA -- because the carrier (stock) in any fbody v6 (without the Y87 option).. IS NOT POSI.

thats right. dogleg - one tire spinning to drive the car. if you want both you have to get a posi carrier - like from a Z28. get a Zexel they run only 99.00 from SLP (take off) and you can get gears from them too. overall performance would be 3.42, if you want a good springy launch and dont care about going super-hyper-fast (your top speed gets cut down too) then go for 3.73.

i personally (i put a posi in mine) want 3.42's cause they are good all around for performance and gas mileage. and i have a 3.4 so..

just my .02.

No where anymore (unless you get lucky on eBay). SLP ran out of the take-off units months ago.

A posi is a good investment, and so are 3.73 or 4.10 gears. People will tell you that your top speed will be so low with 4.10's, however with the .73 overdrive in an M5 the theoretical top speed @ 6000 rpm is 155 mph. IIRC the A4 has a .70 4th gear, so you could technically run even faster.

99% of the people who will tell you not to get 3.73 or 4.10 gears have never even owned a car with them installed. If you don't do lots of highway driving, and like a car that pulls hard, then 4.10's are for you

You can usually find good used gears for about $100, and you can get a used posi from any 4th gen v8 pretty cheap on eBay.

(If you want to talk to someone who has 4.10's in their daily-driver then go to Camarov6.com and look for LittleG. He has a 2002 3.8/M5 with no internal motor work and he runs 14.0 in the 1.4)
