Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

I've got flowmaster 80 series w/ 3" pipes and it sounds too ricey... what could I do to it to tone it down, make it quieter or sound different? Less high pitched fartcan noise is what im trying to do. Is there anything?

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

As I mentioned in your post about the WS6 exhaust, an intake will help your exhaust tone. Headers will also help.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

intake and a 3" hiflow cat....

ur y-pipe collects to 3" diameter, so add a 3" cat, 3" catback and u'll have a very free flowing exhaust - having said that an intake is a HUGE point here

simple, do what I did, hawk the exhaust for what you can, and buy a borla, mine sounds like a mild v-8 until high RPMs

intake, headers, hi flow cat, loudmouth. People will think v8 untill around 3k-3500rpms then it sounds like a fighter jet, LOL.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

If you want something that sounds "respectably" descent on a 3.8L F-body, I'd just replace the Flowmaster with a stock Z28 or SS/WS6 factory cat-back set-up. It still won't sound like a V8 or anything, but it won't have a ricey tone either. Don't go spending all that money on some headers, a highflow cat, or another aftermarket cat-back system just to attain a little better sound overall on your V6 unless your main purpose of doing it is for the performance gains.

Five years ago when I got my first Camaro (2000 3.8L), I immediately had an intake lid and 3" Borla cat-back system put on it. Sounded alright at an idle, but not much better anywhere else (yes, mid to high rpms were horrible). I then added some RKsport headers and the sound was really nice up to 2000rpms...After that, it still sounded like total crap...Just the nature of a V6...

Good luck,

Mike

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

ur flowmaster shouldnt sound ricy untill around 3k as well... there are NO mufflers that is going to get rid of the rice sound at high rpm's.... sorry. im sure somebody will try to bash me saying how theres isnt ricey but...whatever... U can get some good pacesetter headers on ebay for around 100 or so. you can change or gut your cat but that will mostlikely make it sound even more ricy at high rms...will improve the sound a lot in lower rpms though.
As for the borla, they are a good muffler. the price of hem, to me, isnt worth it. they will be quiter than the 80 seires and WILL produce a high rpm rice sound too. i have a a many friends with diffrent exuast on tehre 3.4 and 3.8's and they all will sound ricey... its just part of the 6 cyl.
suggestion... drive at low rpms around people.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

all v6's will sound ricey and 3 inch pipes on a v6 is overkill you shouldnt have to go over 2.5 inch. you want it to sound like a v8 then drop one in there other than that it will never sound like a v8 can come close at idle though but not under load.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

3" pipe is definetly not overkill if you have some simple intake mods.

A 3" in/out bullet muffler from Summit or Jegs will help with the high RPM rasp, but it won't eliminate it completely.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

i have a 3 inch high flow cat, flowmaster dual outlet, 3 inch in, 2 1'2 out to 4 inch tips, sounds good, at hi rpm's, has a loud like, high pitched metal taping sound, i dont know how to describe it, sounds retarded the way i describe it, but it doesnt sound bad, its loud as hell, but i picked up alot more top end as well as mid also, smoothed out the powerband, used to build to 3900 then slowly pull, now it races up to 5800 alot faster, i wanna get clear image headers, anyone have them on there v6 with the same exauhst setup i have?

o yea and to that other guy, its been dyno proven that the 3 inch frees up alot more, you dont lose torque, after my mods, ive beet a 2002 SS camaro 6 speed, and a bunch of mustangs, and a 2004 saleen at work. not all car, remmeber, its whos driving.......

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

Unless you spray, 3" is too big. For a turbo or V8, yes...for our V6s, no. While you don't "lose" torque, you move it from the lower RPMs to the higher RPMs. Slower off the line, more pull later on.

Those must have been some crappy Saleen/SS drivers or they weren't trying.

I'm not calling you a liar, nor can anyone prove/disprove what you claim but there is no good reason for either car to lose to a mildly modded 3.8 that is putting down maybe 220 HP.

Unless of course you neglected to add that you are boosted and spray.

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

Borla doesnt sound like rice at all. I have just the rear section, and it sounds good all the way through the RPM's. Like a V8? No. Just good for a v6.

Downside. its expensive

Re: Exhaust sounds like rice... help?

i agree with import killer. i know people that laugh when people put a 3 inch exhaust on v6 cuz its proven that you will not gain anything really and if you did it would be like 1 hp if even, unless you are heavily modded and that doesnt mean a simple k&n air filter, why is that listed as mod for people its a performance air filter not something completely different than stock as say a CAI and that still wouldnt require 3 inch. need to get to turbo and super and nos then we can talk 3 inch maybe.

i agree also that borla is expensive but there main customers are vette owners i think so they say if they got the cash to buy that car they can buy this exhaust. lol
