exhaust problem?

the problem:

a week or two ago I started noticing the tiniest of lapses in my acceleration. It would stumble just a little and actually felt like a complete miss in two races (mustang GT and a celica GT) on the same day. as I was returning from a delivery last night the car started to act extremely weak, similar to how it does with a burned clutch(higher RPMs than needed for the speed). it got extremely bad really quick and an SES light popped on and kept blinking, I stopped at a gas station trying to figure out what the deal was. the engine was bogging down but not stopping, and I checked under the car to see what I could see and my cat was glowing molten red. 70,000 miles on a delivery driver if that helps any.

my guess:

Im thinking the cat is backed up from carbon rocks or something thus causing the engine to wane from exhaust coming into the engine and the cat heating up cause the exhaust has no place to go. I dont have a code reader and havent had time to check the code, so thats why im asking here.
