Engine upgrade help...

Say I've got a 96 3.8 ltr 120k motor. It's not blown, not having any major problems. Then I've got 3-$4,000 dollars sitting at home waiting to be spent. What would be the easiest, SAFEST way to get my car into the 14's? I know I would like to have it rebuilt so it will run for another 100,000..any ideas? If a list could be made out, that would be awesome, and most appreciated. Also, don't forget to figure in the damned labor charges................ I hate em. Thanks for all your help.

BTW, Nitrous isn't out of the question.....

to be honest, 3-4k? might be able to get you a lt1 swap, I have seen lt1 engien/tranny/PCM and harness for $1500-$2000, giving you a good $1000-$2000 for other stuff.

BUt building up a N/A 3.8L motor? I guess www.supersixmotorsports.com

But would I not need new engine mounts, a new computer, new springs and fuel lines and crap to get that LT1 swap? not mentioning the damned labor chargeS???

Which of those packages would give me the best power, and how much more power could I expect?

I think the LT1 swap is your best bet.

i am with him on that swap. i have a 2002 3.8L and as soon as i get the money i am swaping it for a LS1 6speed. there is this place in Oklahoma (where i am from) that specializes in those swaps. i talked to them and a LS1 conversion is 4000 bucks and the motor is loaded (full camaro pull out) then i would need headlight harness, gage cluster, and engine mount, extra 500 dollars (and because i am going to a stick it will need a new drive shaft) rear end will work but i suggest posi when you get the money for one. they will sell me everything there except for the driveshaft for around 5000 with the rearend. it sounds like a lot of money but a LT1 swap in your car with cold air and exhaust will put you in the 13s. if you think you want to go this route and you want to get a hold of them the number is 405-495-9114 and they open from 9-6 mon-fri cent. time i'm sure they can tell you everything you would need. i don't know what a LT1 would cost but i am sure less than an LS1

a full engine swap with everything will cost you 5 grand. that includes everything.
i would say get the SSM power pack with some 3.73s and a slp take off lsd, a torque converter, and some drags and you will be in 14s easy.
i speak from experience. but my car only had 20,000 miles when my power pack went in.

Ok, now I'm starting to love some people on here after hearing them say it will work for only 5,000. But, does this include labor?....ahah, thats a pain in the ***. I already have an exhaust that will work for the LT1/LS1 and it only cost me 400 in parts, they charged me NO labor! W00t W00t. Anyways, I saw two of you were on the north and south of me, I live in Dallas, Texas. If anyone knows of where I could get a hookup, let me know! thanks!

korben, 5 grand includes install. this is what i found out: $2000 motor LS1 it is easier to find LS1s than it is LT1s. i was told this by http://www.hpsalvage.com $1000 for the tranny, and $2000 for labor. when my car hits high milage this is what i plan on doing myself, but i have already put so much money into my 6 i am not so sure now.
btw, i will be in ennis feb 15 along with half of TXs other f body owners. you should be there too. SLP appreciation day check it out http://www.slponline.com

now back to your car. with such high mileage i think if you were to get the power pack from SSM you would be doing your car a favor. installing that is like doing a rebuild but better! install on my power pack was just under a grand.

hey 1fastv6, im starting to lvoe you man, you really are helping me out. I just want to make totally sure about this...does that $2,000 include motor mounts, pumps, and everything that I need in the engine?

I am trying to run on a budget of about $5,000, do you think I can do it for a full swap of an automatic tranny to a manual and the V6 tot he V8?

when i was looking into it, $5000 was the number i came up with for everything. instead i ended up getting the supersix motorsports power pack. you should try to get ahold of silver00 on this board. his swap should be complete by now- it wasnt too long ago he posted some pictures of the work in progress.
