Emergency Brake
Emergency Brake
I want to tighten the cable on my Emergency brake. It seems to be loose and I have to pull the handle almost straight up and down to get it to lock. How can I go in there and tighten it? I took off the center console today, but I couldn't figure out how to tighten it. Any suggestions?
I naturaly use my emergency brake almost all the time, mine sometimes only needs to go up 3 clicks before it locks and sometimes it needs a few more.
yours was probibly stretched too far but when you apply it find out how far it has to go to stop your car, it doesent have to be on super hard.

Court,
Here's the Haynes version.
The parking brake cables may stretch over a perod of time, necessitating adjustment. Also the parking brake should be checked for proper adjustment whenever the rear cables are disconnected. If the parking brake handle travel is less than 13 or more than17 clicks, the parking brake needs adjustment.
Drum rear brakes
Pull the parking brake handle exactly 2 clicks.
Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands.
Locate the adjusting screw on the rear side of the equalizer bracket. To keep the brake cable stud from turning, hold it with one wrench and turn the adjusting nut with another wrench until the left rear wheel can just be turned in reverse(using two hands) but is locked when you attempt to turn it forward.
Release the parking brake and make sure both rear wheels turn freely and that there is no brake drag in either direction, then remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
