Question EGR problems

My friend has a 94 3.4, started sputtering around, he took it in and they told him it was egr, two out of the three valves were screwed up. They quoted him at $500 to fix it.

Anyway, I looked online and the cheapest egr valve on advance auto was 171 bucks!

Any suggestions for him? That crap is expensive. I plan on deleting mine with programming if it ever starts acting stupid, but programming for my car is cheap, dunno much about his. Can he just clean it out?

If it is real bad he could just block it off for now.
And take the money he saved from getting it fixed and get it totaly deleated.

You can clean it...but that is a temp. fix.

It is an easy install...very easy.

Thanks, I'll tell him to block it off and see how it runs.

I don't know if he'll do it though, his first mods planned are altezzas, tint, & body kit so I don't know how technically inclined he will be to do his own work.

Sigh...

you can block it off, or you can just leave it how it is, either way its gonna throw a SES light

its very possible that its not even the EGR valve, i bought a new one for my car when my SES light kept coming on and the codes said that solenoid 2 and 3 werent working and even after i replaced it the light still came on giving me the same code.. i just blocked it off and pulled the SES light out

He says his car barely runs the way it is right now.
He took it in to a repair shop to see what was wrong with it.

Kinda sucks for him, he just bought the car a week or two ago, and the dealer that sold it to him won't repair it because he only got the basic powertrain warranty.

remove it and make sure that it;s not on backwords. sounds silly I know but I have seen it on another GM car. dunno if it can happen on these motors but it can on a 3.1 and 3.4 FWD GM v6.

another thing that an set an EGR code is the MAP sensor. you might wanna check that out as well

Well he got that fixed.... not only that but he has at least one broken spark plug... I pulled out one for him tonight and the car runs a lot better- I don't know if he overtightened them or it cracked as a result of egr backfires. The plug I pulled out is broken right at the base of the metal.

It's still chugging, though, feels like when my pulley ate one of my plug wires, so hopefully there's another one hiding on the passenger side- too dark to try that insanity tonight.

Thanks all for your help.
