Define: "drifting"

There seams to be no point what so ever.
I was looking at a all rice magizine at a artical "How to build a drift car part 2".
what I can gather from it is you spend a bunch of money on JDM parts to get a car that looks like a drifter.
Then you go out and slide around to look cool?
I am in japan and I see lots of these cars and this is what I see, they try to look cool but have no other function.
I see a lot of drift cars around here you can tell its a drift car by the frount and side damage that never gets fixed.
Do they realy do any thing?

whoa hold up! they definitly dont make it around corners faster while drifting.. if that was the case every racing series would use this technique.. there are not racing series that utilizes drifting besides rallycross\WRC\hillclimbs, and drifting competitions... drifting is a big sport in japan but i just dont get it!!!!

A certain degree of drifting gets you around the corners better, but what they do is opposite lock to look cool. Its fun to do but not sure its a sport, I look at it like doing donuts. I probably thorw my car into a 4 wheel opposite lock slide once every 2 weeks or more, depending on how my car is running.

If I want a motor sport I think I will try autocrossing and drag racing, ohh wait I do, well not autocrossing anymore, haven't had tires worth a damn on my car since december.

Something I noticed is every import magazine, keeps talking about "Drifting! The new import car craze!" But its been the new craze for like 3 years, when is it gonna stop being "the new craze"

Drifting is really big with the import guys here, and since im friends with alot of them and have rode shotgun on some runs I must say its really fun to experiance, but no more fun that drag racing or traditional road racing. Drifting is taking a car into a turn, get it to slide (different cars and drivers have different methods wiether its FWD, RWD ect) continue the slide through the turn while trying to maintain your speed and look good doing it. Personnally, its too risky with not enough pay off for me to do it. But if you want to take a Nissian 240 around a turn sideways, whatever just don't hit me in the process.
