Anyone know how to check to see if the ingition module or crank sensor is faulty and a 3.4l Its in a 94 bird.

Re: checking ingition module

my x's dad(x's car with the problem) took it ICM to a local parts store to have it checked. They said it was fine. The kids that work at that part store dont' know **** about **** when it comes to fixing cars. So i got no faith in there opinion. I'am looking for the answer on how to figure it out in a few places so when i find it I'll let you know. But if you find it first let me know man.

You probably could use a multi-meter to check the ohm of the connections but I'm not sure which wires and what ohm it should be. So you should try looking that up about testing ICM with multi-meter. I'll check my book and see if the info is in there and I'll tell you.

Re: checking ingition module

Ok I found out how to check them. This check tells you if module and sensor ok together. If one of the 3 modules or possibly 2 out of 3 fail it is the modules but if they all fail it could most likely be the sensor. The sensor itself it can only be checked by dealership. This test does somehow test if its operating right. For the test you need a 12v tester light. You remove 1 coil pack at a time and hook the tester light to the 2 pins from the module that go to the coil and you crank the car and it should flash really fast. That means its good but if it don't flash or flash slow it could be module or sensor. So you place that coil back on and try next coil. Make sure you only do one at a time. So if they all flash fast all is good with module and sensor. Now to test the coil packs if they are ok you need a multi-meter. Attach each clip from multi-meter to the 2 terminals on top of one coil. The ohm reading should be 5,000-7,000(5,000-6,500 3800 engine)ohms on the 3.4l engine. You can flip the coil over and test the inputs where the module connects to the coil. They should read 0.35-1.50(0.3-0.6 3800 engine)ohms on the 3.4l engine. The readings can look different depending on the settings you have. Like 5,000 can look like 5.00 and the 0.3 can look like 0.03. Hope this helps.

Re: checking ingition module

They said they dont trust guys at stores that just sell parts over the counter and wanted to know a way they could do it themselves. Plus all parts stores do it for free.
