Cheapest way to make a Y87 muffler look respectable?
Ya, in 10k miles it is build up, not opening up. Or maybe some welds rusting through, and I wouldn't call anything on the exhaust that changes at 10k miles break in but the beginnings of break down. On the turbo and straight through packed type of mufflers it is referred to as burn out, but call it beak in if you want. As far as cat related, they do get plugged, the matrix gets cracked, etc.
A placebo is like a fake pill. Its like how people can put things on their cars like the tornado air and feel a power difference because they expect to. With mufflers, you expect the sound to change after a period of time so to you it does. I've never heard a noticable difference on Flows from the beginning to the end. They all have the same hollow metallic drone.

I personally hate flowmasters, they are aluminized crap. I have yet to figure out why Flowmaster hasnt made A) a stainless series, and B) just a rear section. I have heard the change, what ever you want to call it. It most lilky is the aluminized garbarge starting to die.

Even though i don't care for them much, this guy is selling flowmaster for $40 if the original poster wants it.

I agree flowmasters are GARBAGE. Don't sound good, don't last, don't look good. Go with BORLA. It's the best. Yes you pay alot but it's so worth it. B&B is awesome too but Borla is hands down the best.
I agree with fbird95 on the take off muffler from SLP. I just received mine for that price. It's a takeoff Firebird and it has the very heavy cast rectangular tips on it.
It was just a matter of cutting mine off, cutting 4 slots in the mounting pipe of the new one, slipping my old pipe end into the new one, and clamping with a muffler clamp. I also added 2 pipe hangers close to each end, bolted to the rails above, to relieve the weight and keep them from moving around on bumpy roads. They also added a nice deep tone to the exhaust and I figure if I upgrade later I can cut the tips off and reinstall. I'm very happy with mine.

I wouldn't fool with getting a z-28 mufler unless you're going to end up with the tips anyway, you're going to pay atleast $100 for that muffler and it will need installing,

If you were in florida I know a local guy said he had like 4-5 of them laying around.
As fo your maybe remove the tips and have something welded in its place.
I had a cutout, cat, custom made 2.5 in. s-pipe, and a z28 catback all installed for $90
