!cat questions

My friend just got a 96 3800 camaro a4. He wants to remove the cat, but we are wondering if it will trip a code. We are going to put in a test pipe too. Also, what is the stock exhaust piping diameter?

It'll trip a code. Either put on an 02 simulator or have the PCM tuned. Not sure of the stock diameter off hand, I'm guessing 2.5 inches. Maybe someone else will chime in on that one.

i just bought and 02 sim to get rid of my code, i had a 2.5 inch piece of pipe put in and stretched a little to connect to the y pipe because it has a 3 inch collector and then at the other end just welded in the rest of the exhaust which is 2.25

!cat really doesnt do much...its gonna trip ur code like people said....its gonna give u a deeper tone but a lot more rasp up top...no HP gains really so its up to u if u wanna spend the money on it...u could also instead of gettin 02 sims get them tuned out instead of spendin the money on them

I was just makin sure. I know it trips a code on the obdII pcm for the z28, but wasnt sure if it did on the 3800. I didnt really check out the exhaust system, nor do I know much about them. He isnt looking for power, he is just looking to make his car louder, and sound better, so he wants the cat off, and I was goin to give him my old flowmaster muffler

Yeah, it still has a post cat 02 sensor monitoring the catalyst efficiency.

He might wanna look into replacing the cat with a bullet muffler. That way he'll still have all the flow of a test pipe, but it will tone down the high-RPM rasp.
