Cai

I've asked before on someone elses post and didn't get any clear answers, I am getting some money coming in soon and was ganna use it to mod my car... it wasn't to much but I figured I'd start off with CAI...

Should I make a $20 Homemade Kit? or buy someones aftermarket brand? which one has the better gains if not the same? Also what parts and tools will I need to make a homemade CAI? any website listing them?

About how much expected of a gain, if any can I expect from either?

There's another question thats been aching my mind to, if I got a larger throttle body will I need to modify any CAI kit?

(BTW it's a 3.8L V6 if it matters for the kits)

Go with the homemade, it will yield the same and cost tons less. It's been told how to make one hundreds of times so search. A bigger TB will involve tons of complicated customization, non invovling the CAI.

Also, are whisperlids any better than CAI's? whats the differenceS? which is easier to install? Can I use in conjunction with a larger TB I may install later?

I have the Ligenfelter CAI and its awesome. Remember, homemade stuff can sometimes void a warranty.

SLP CAI or arivona speed and marine. by the way, a trick seemed to make a differance for me. make a scoop at the bottom of the air dam under the filter cone to push air into the air filter area. if you dont know what im talking about, i'll try and get a pic to you.

I did one better than the "scoop". A while back after cleaning the filters, I removed the splash guard directly under the CAI that you are recommending people cut into entirely. Took it onto the freeway on a cool evening and tested to see if it made a difference...you might be shocked as to what difference it made:

none

Though if you wanted to make it easier for the filters to fall off the tube and then out into the street, that would be a very effective way. If the filters fall off, they will simply be sitting on the splash guard until you put them back on. And keeping water out though I don't think that would ever be as big an issue as the scoop letting in more debris and road "junk".

believe it or not, I did feel a difference. and my "scoop", would let air in with out the danger of losing your filter. it seemed that if I took a long drive and stopped to feel my intake elbow. it was cooler with the scoop. I'm not saying that I'm a gm tech and that I know everything about v6's. just giving an observation, that I tried to test to the best of my abilities.
