Best muffler for a v6?

What do you think would be the best muffler for a v6? My car is a RS and it already had stock duel exhaust which I would think would help some. But I got hooker on it now and it sounds alright, guess icant expect much outta a v6 but i was hoping to find something a little better. Thanks

Re: Best muffler for a v6?

the most you can do is gut the cat converters and put on hookers or flow masters.

Re: Best muffler for a v6?

There really isn't a "best" muffler for these cars. the question of cat-backs and mufflers is 100% opinion based, because the only notable difference between all of them is sound. They'll all net you very similar gains.

You dont have 'dual exhaust' just a dual outlet muffler
....and honestly I have NEVER heard a 3.8 camaro sound good....ever. they pop instead of rumble.

My buddys 97 RS has the american thuder system (flowmaster)....Its almost embarrisng to drive around in it, It really sounds bad/not right. everyone kinda snickers at him

Leave the stock setup on there, and mabey get some polished tips or somthing

EDIT: woops! I saw that you said you already have a hooker set-up....If your happy with it, leave it....like you said you cant expect to much, and you dont want to drop too much $$ on it.

My RKSport sounds great on my 3.4. But then again, the 60 degree engines sound better than the 90s.

Dynomax Super Turbo. Name sounds ricey, but the tone is far from it. If you have an auto, unless you hit the rev limiter, then you won't hear no popping or anything. Sounds good through the whole RPM range.

Re: Best muffler for a v6?

Performance-wise, there won't be much of a difference between the mufflers. If you do replace your exhaust, it would be beneficial to get a bigger I-pipe. It will improve the sound of the exhaust and free up some HP. I still believe my intake/exhaust combo (SLP CAI, 2 3/4 I-pipe) was the best mod I've done to my car.

I've never been a fan of the ST exhaust. Not to many people I've talked to have heard of it, but Spintech sounds pretty good on the 3.8. Of course, no matter what exhaust you go with, it will get that sound everyone hates. Just part of owning this engine. EVERY exhaust I've heard on a V6 has this sound...

yea i got the same thing going and im sort of pissed, I really want to get a different muffler

like the tone of the sound is fine....but instead of it rumbling, like the rumble noise every half second or something, it just sorta spits all the time....im really mad and it isnt what i expected at all

id really like to get a new muffler on it, though id like to try gettign headers first to see if it makes it any better sounding

i heard that the TCP rumbler has the best sound on a 3.8L v6....so i was thinking about just buying one of those since i already got a flowmaster cat back...im still not sure, and now you guys are saying any muffler you put onto the 3.8L will sound shatty.....now im mad

i know i didnt expext great things from it, but i still expected it to atleast sound good, and i dont even have that

please can anyone help me to pick the best sounding muffler....since all the clips you ever hear on the sites are of v8s with the mufflers....arrgg i need help please!!!

P.S. how do people record their cars sound and post it on here, cuz id like to do that to show you guys what I mean

also if i just bought the rumbler muffler would it fit right in with the rest of my american thunder cat back system??

Sorry to say man, but that is part of owning a 3.8L engine, camaro or not, they all sound like crap. Even the GTP with S/C sound like popcorn. I Prefer to keep the stock exhaust on there, but replace that awful, rusted- turn down tip....

....you know what botthers me? GM puts a decnet dual exit muffler with polished tips on Sunfires, caviliers, GP, GA's...etc and they dont put them on a Camaro???

Re: Best muffler for a v6?

You guys are all comparing the sound to a v8. our cars will never sound just like our v8 bretheren. Just like the LT1 and LS1 sound different and neither of them sound quite like a mustang. I wouldnt say they all 3.8's sound like crap either. Yes, I have heard some bad ones, but some pretty good ones as well. I have a full 3" magnaflow, high flow cat and headers and it sounds pretty damn good as long as your not reving it up to redline like an *******. It still suprises me how good it sounds now after ditching a flowmaster cat-back. I dont often hear it other than in the cab, but my wife had the car last week and I was standing outside BS'ing with a neighber and heard a nice deep rumble a couple blocks away. suprised me when it was actually her in my car that rounded the corner. Camming it, adding some nice lope will make it sound even better.

the rumbler uses a bullet style muffler further up the system. completely different setup than the flowmaster. it could be put in, but you would have to chop up your existing setup and fit it in place.
