Yes a 98 5 speed should be able to take your RS, you come with 170hp 255@2400 torque, a 5 speed comes with 200 hp/ 225 torque. The 98 weights just about the same as you. You probably gained about 10 hp from a cat back. So this race could possibly pan out to be a drivers race. If you are a great driver, and he is not that great, then you could take him. Anything can happen in racing.

BTW I love the color of your car, and what do you mean by T-5...its not coming to my mind.

thanks man. T-5 means 5-speed manual tranny, the 82-92 5-speed (heck maybe even 93-02) were built by borg-warner and are called T-5's. just like the 6 spds are T-56's.
another q...could a 98+ camaro HANDLE better than mine?

heres my situation...
i bought my 92 RS back in Feb '03. got my license april 3rd. have had fun with the car its not fast but for a 16yr old its pretty potent. within 2 wks or so i wanted more and began to look for a 93-97 LT1 F-body. everyone i find is an auto (i wont drive an automatic) but there are a lot of V6 5-speeds. so on autotrader.com i found a 98 Black Camaro 70k 5spd. power everything i dont think t-tops .

now the problem...
get the V6= better gas mileage, looks sweet, reliability, "creature comforts", still the manual, get it now, price on RS doesnt deteriorate too much b/c i can sell it basically how i bought it.

wait for a 6spd to come up= SLIGHTLY worse gas mileage than v6, have to wait who knows how long, lots of power/speed, more fun to drive, trouble (w/ cops and parents im sure), gonna cost a bunch more than V6, wont be able to get a 98+ (theyre what 10....12k?), forced to get LT1 w/ dreaded OPTISPARK

guys....
WHAT DO I DO?!????

edit: i just cant see the 3.8 replacing the feel/SOUND of my car. nothing feels better than revvin 2nd out to 4500 listenin to the motor churn then shiftin and catch rubber....

Why wont you drive an auto? Why dont you just call ur car an M5? Thats what most people go by on this board.

My z28 auto can smear a stoc v6 stick shift? And its a heads or tails in a race with a manual Z28. Basically its who gets traction, and who is a better driver. Not all Lt-1's have problems with optispark.

Handling should be similar:
Most of the floor stamping and rear suspension was carried over, the 1993 Camaro featured new plastic front fenders, a new short-arm/long-arm front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and an all new sleek styling.

You should do what you feel.

I had a 95 3.4 that took a dump on a 87 Firebird with a 305.

i think its a whole lot more fun to drive stick and by no means am i calling an auto Z28 slow. actually in a race id bet the auto would have the advantage over an M6. i really like the look of the 98+ cars and gas is killin me with my 305. its not havin any probs yet but its got 137,500 on the clock so i can see things goin wrong very soon. i think im gonna go look at that 98 tomorrow...
