94 running like ass - need help
94 running like *** - need help
My 94 V6 130k is running like complete crap. I replaced the plugs and plug wires with no luck. Its idling very bad. Stuttering. One of the pulleys (i think for the alternator) is making a whiny noise. When I first got the car it did this but not as bad. I did researching on the forum and it seems that it may be o2 sensors or maybe a clogged cat. The guy I bought it from said the cat was replaced not long before I bought it. The muffler is shot. I would really like to replace the the entire exhaust system. Although I'm debating on just selling it and get a LT1.
I posted a 1.5MB MPG of my engine running, thought it could help.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me. . .

Does it start running better if you give it some gas?If the problem goes away when under throttle then check your vaccuum system particularly the EGR vavle. If it stays bad under throttle then try your O2 sensors. How's your gas mileage?Do you smell gas out of the exhaust? Those 2 things point towards it being an exhaust/o2 issue.Good luck.

yes it does run better when I give it gas. Idling smoothes out. Then it starts choking again.
Also when I'm going about 50mph the engine seems to stall/hesitate for a second then it's fine again.
My gas mileage has gotten really bad the last few months. I go through a quarter of a tank on a 25 minute drive. And thats driving normally, not beating on it.
Havent huffed my exhaust lately, but I don't believe I smell gas. But Ill go give that a try.
Also, I just remembered that my wife says she smells "wrotten eggs" sometimes when she drives it.
I'm not exactly sure what to do to check the EGR valve. The part is around $200 and I'd hate to spend the cash not knowing if that was the problem.
Thank you!

You can try cleaning the EGR valve for free. It's only 2 or 3 bolts and it takes like 5 minutes to take off.I would just try that before buying a new one. Also some places like Autozone will check it for free.If you have the extra cash,it might not be a bad idea to swap out the o2 sensors anyway. They are usually only good for 80k miles or so and they are pretty cheap like $18 each (there are 2).That "rotten egg" smell sounds like a new cat breaking in,not sure on that though.Good luck.

thanks for your help. I'm going to rip it out tomorrow. If cleaning it doesn't help, Ill just take it out and get some block off plates. Its a lot cheaper than buying a new one. =). And regardless, Ill replace the o2 sensors. Even though I have no idea where they are. Although I hear its not that difficult. I learn as I go. =)
The o2 sensors are easy to find. There are 2 of them on your Y-pipe and they have wires going into them. It's the only place on your exhaust where wires connect to,you can't miss them!
Be advised though, those suckers can be STUCK in there.Try soaking them with WD40 and running the car a little to heat the exhaust up a little (not too hot though!).

wanted to thank you again for your help. I learned a lot the past couple days.
replaced o2's
Remounted exhaust with new clamps
through on a new stock muffler
dremeled old tail pipe off to use on new one
cleaned EGR (didnt work)
did EGR block off using home made plates
What fun! Finally cleaned out my messy *** garage and have a nice work space in there now. The Camaro seems to be running much better. ty!
