3.8 V6 off road

Hi guys,

I'm an off road addicted, from Romania, Europe. I'm competing in the off road championship, bla bla... I'm considering to do an engine swap in my comp car and I need something to don't have a huge consumption (as I must drive at least 700 km = 350 miles self sufficient...), to have about 220-280 hp, to can be able to put a "stick" transmision and behind that a transfer case...
And, of course, to find the donnor vehicle here...;-))

So, I thought that the 3.8 V6 could be the solution...

And here I came with the questions:

- can I directly bolt a transfer case (NP208, or a NP241, Chevy Blazer t/case) behind a 5 speed manual gear box that came with the 1997 Camaros?! Because I found a 1997 Camaro in good shape for a resonable price...which happens to be a stick g/box.

- what sort of improvements can I do in order to gain few more "ponnies"? I do have a Vortec 2 supercharger that I could use...

Many thanks in advance,

Gabi Nicolae

Re: 3.8 V6 off road

Hmm. As you may already know, the 3.8 V6 F-body application was backed up by a BW T5 manual tranny. Now, from some researching I've done relative to working on my Bronco II, I know that T5s are used in some 4x4 applications, so there are definitely adapters out there to allow you to put a t-case behind the T5. I just did a little searching in an attempt to find such a device, but I didn't find anything right away- but I didn't do much digging at all either. I believe such an adapter would take the place of the T5 tailhousing.

As far as gaining HP, the 3.8 F-bodies were rated at 200 HP stock. Since you'll be doing a fabbed install, you've got lots of opportunity to free up power via well-executed intake and exhaust components. I know of a few guys who have done SC installs on 3.8s, but from what I recall, it's a serious undertaking- although you may again be benefitted here by the nature of your install.

For some more info on V6 tech, check out www.camarov6.com. They've got a much more focused community and will probably have better details for extracting power from your 3.8.

Good luck!

IMO, if you can fit it in your application, I would consider putting in a supercharged 3.8L series II. They are factory supercharged and in a large variety of vehicles.

Or maybe just use the shortblock and put the heads, intake of an f-body on it and put your supercharger on it.

jsut some thoughts. They are rated form 240-280 hp stock depending on the year/model. And very interchangeable with the f-body v6 motor.
