i raced my friends in his 1998 3.8 mustang m5 i got the jump on him until 3rd gear and then he started pulling away but then i caught up to him but he ended up beating me by a 1/4 length of a car what could give me the edge???

Open up the exhaust and some intake, and like said tune up, fule filter, plugs wires... the usual stuff...
I also reccomend cleaning up your ignition coil points.
A 3.8l isn't the end all to end all of motors... Many people will say a 3.4L runs mid 16s, and a 3.8l runs a mid 15. but the math doesn't work out 40 hp and gain a full second? nope mroe like a half second, but ideally but Drag racing math, .4.
I say
exhaust
intake
plugs wires
gears/lsd/lt1 or ls1 drivesahft
My roomate never ran faster then a 16.7 in his 99 5-speed camaro. But he was an idiot

he said 98' 3.8 mustang last year for them haveing 145 hp it shoulden't take much for a 3.4 fbody to beat it
headers help alot on the 3.4 as the exhaust manifold are very restrictive on them,as they are smaller than the 3rd gens 2.8/3.1 manifolds and have an oxygen sensor thu each one
