Question 1996 3.8 Starting Problem

I have an intermitant problem with my camaro not wanting to start, if it doesnt start right away i can wait for a few mins and it will fire right up like it never missed a lick. I have changed the Fuel Pump, Coils and the Coil module, Plugs , Fuel Pump Relay. I have noticed that when it does not crank i can remove one of the coil wires and none of the cylinders are firing. so I want to beleive that that would rule out any fuel problems. I have benn told that it could be the CrankShaft Sensor. If you can help please do. and if you think it is the crankshaft sensor could someone please tell me where it is and how to change it ,, I have already bought one ,, just need to know if and how to change it,,

Thanks in Advance
Kenneth

I was told today that the crankshaft position sensor is behind the harmonic balancer. But this person says that a CPS usualy will completly quit , not intermitantly give problems,,, any Info?

you might want to look into your passkey II system. my 96 did this and it ended up being the key cylinder in the steering column. your key should have a little computer chip on it. clean this with some q-tips and rubbing alchol, and also try to get something to clean out your key cylinder. this might help temporarly, but you probably need to take it in to a dealer and have them replace the whole cylinder. i belive that only a dealership can do this because of the different security codes that come with each key. hope this helps

If your car wont turn over at all sometimes (if I understand you correctly) it's not your crank sensor. If this isn't working the car willturn over but won't start. If it is, your need to pull off the harmonic balancer and the cover behind it. Make sure you keep it from turning. The sensor itself is a easy removal. Usually the sensor just gets dirty especially if you have a leak of somekind.
