z28 vs mustang

I was going to my friend's house cuz we were going to an evo meeting with one of our friends. As I turn to a main street I see this really loud nice sounding purple mustang('94-98) in front of me. Eventhough, I haven't raced that much in my camaro(1 other time) I immediately knew what was about to happen.
He goes and I put it into D(A4) and we are pretty even. Whats the dumbest thing that I could do? I don't realize how fast the rpms are going up (last car I had was a 305 trans am) and it hits the rev-limiter and he passes me. So from about 35/40-70 (didn't pay attention to mph) we were pretty even.
We hit the red light and I'm behind him. He takes off and I'm right on his *** . Unfortunately, I mess up again (my car hits the rev-limiter if I don't let the foot off the gas to switch gears ) and I let it go.
I get next to him and the guy was real cool. He said he had exhaust, full intake, pulleys, coilovers, and some other stuff but the light turned green and I had to go. Don't know if he had anything else done, but it sounded mean as hell.
Don't know if he had anything
I was happy in the sense that I stayed with him even though the stupid problem my car has with the shifting of gears . Fun race nonetheless.

Your A4 hits the rev limiter when it shifts?

good try, fix that slipping tranny before you're left stranded some where.

I never understand why people shift auto's manually...it's not like it shifts any faster! From a roll, it may be quicker to start in a lower gear rather than have it drop down when you hit the gas, but people do it from a stop...I don't get it. Throw a shift kit on that badboy, keep it in OD and mash the gas...

i assume he only switched it from OD to D, which really doesnt matter if he's WOT anyway, well until he runs out of gears in D, which is 120+ anyway. or did i miss smething and he was hitting the rev limiter for other reasons, other than a slipping trans that is.

Older transmissions could have redlining problems due to vacuum leaks or improper adjustments. All the newer electronically controlled transmissions will be much better shifting by themselves, but some people just don't get it and think they're somehow going faster by putting it manually in 1st. As if they weren't there already...

To make matters worse, some companies will make the tranny shift harder if you're manually shifting it. I never noticed that in the Camaro, but I know some of the more expensive vehicles utilize this as well.

I also agree that the only time to manually downshift is if you're going to stomp on it from a roll.

I don't shift my car manually except when going into drive(D). Someone told me that since the gears are different in this car, the computer has to be re-adjusted and others on here have agreed. Others tell me its the transmission slipping. Either way, I have never put my car lower than D or manually shifted the car as some believed.

I blew my first engine like that... shifted into 1st instead of 2nd...

Dude, nice race but get that tranny fixed before you get stuck somewhere!
