Angry WRX knowledge requested

Ok most of my friends I hang out with are pretty cool and open-minded, but one of my buddys just has to talk smack about my car. I never hear the end of it "piece of **** domestic" "american cars suck" "I'll smoke you". So when he first got his new car, an 05' WRX, we raced at the track. My 13.6@104 to his 14.7@91(keep in mind my car is untuned and my sixty foots were like 2.4s and 2.3s.) This would have shut up anyone else, but not him. He recently installed an hks exhaust, aem intake, and Cobb tuning programer. The bolt ons don't worry me, what does is the programmer. I read up on it and suposedly it brings his boost up to 14psi and gives the car 260whp. I would hate to lose the next race, does anyone know the true results of this programmer? any info is appreciated.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

14 psi is nothing on a WRX so I doubt he'll be making "serious" hp. If he can drive it he may be able to beat a 13.6 ET but it'll be shy of your mph by 2-3 at least. All you've got to do is hook a little better and you'll be fine.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

No offense but why do people ask these question on an fbody board as if fbody owners know the ins and outs of tuning a modified turbocharged import?

Look in the above sig and you'll notice that car owners of all sorts hang out here. Thanks for opinions, sorry to make another lame "who would win" post.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

260 whp? No way with his mods. It's 260 HP at the flywheel that he would get to, which is a dismal 195 HP to the wheels due to the high drivetrain loss from AWD. The exhaust and intake might gain him another 10-15 hp. I've worked on WRX's and am not impressed to be honest. Step up to the WRX STi and you have a much better platform to build from.

Here you go:
http://cobbtuning.com/wrx/powerpackages.html

My buddy was Cobb stage 2 plus uppipe, downpipe, catback, intake, panel filter, and some other intake elbow and still only traps about 99 mph. The 1/4 mile times that they list on Cobbs site are WAY optimistic by the way.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

Ive looked into possibly getting a wrx in the past years...The conclusion I came to are the mods get expensive as hell and it takes alot for what I would want it to be at...The sti ofcourse is a different story and second like gotboost posted above I can tell ya what makes a mustang or fbod go fast but ask me about of of these *** cars and im pretty much clueless

Re: WRX knowledge requested

trust me, anything short of an STI you really don't have to worry about. Just work on your launches a little and you'll be fine.

Don't underestimate it. My friend had an 02 WRX wagon. All he had was a mild tuner and a cat back and ran 13.40's. He just got an STI that sucker pulls hard as hell.

No offense, but why do you come to an F-body board and preach about modified turbocharged imports? That's all you do on here.

The Anti Riced: From your sig, i don't see headers listed. Those are a huge restriction on stock LT1s (20rwhp+ gains alone), and very restrictive on a H/C car. Get some MACs, AS&Ms, or LTs and some good programming and watch your ETs fall considerably (mid-low 12s seem the norm for that setup with good 60's).

Re: WRX knowledge requested

UTEC is the best programmer for WRXs. It costs loads of money, but makes them very quick with bolt ons and turbo upgrades, etc..

BTW tell your friend to STFU, he lives in America and is speaking trash on our cars. I hate people who say stuff like that, they can go live in Japan if they want.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

I am not sure if this will bring insight or not but i have some WRX experience. I have worked alot on my friends 02. He has full 3" exhuast, an intake, and runs 15-16psi from a Manual boost controller. When he gets a good launch (1.8 60') and he actually gets that POS linkage to push the forks into 3rd gear he runs a 13.6 @ 98. From a roll we are pretty even through 1st and 2nd in third i start pulling and by 4th i am blowing past him like he isn't even on the gas anymore. Now i recently meant a guy with a 04 WRX ( i meant him by racing him this past weekend) He has full 3" ,a "stage 2" computer, BOV (useless) , and intake. We ran from a 1st gear roll, from 1st to 3rd i made up about a 1 1/2 car handicap, and by 4th i really starting to pass him quick, at which point he shutdown. Over all here is my conclusion. From a stop with your 60's you are barely going to catch up to a car with his mods in the 1/4, from a roll you will still stomp him (esp up high).

hope that helps - Carl

*edit* all races were NA for me

Re: WRX knowledge requested

Yeah, that's the sad part about AWD. It's all in the launch. Even after all those mods, they are still trapping 98-99 mph. What that means is daily driving on the street, they feel like a stock LT1 after all the mods they needed to do with the car. Their ET's come all from the launch. I'd MUCH rather have a car with a typical 60' time with high trap speeds. That's what's fun to drive on the street. If you need to burn your clutch every light to get a good ET, then that's NOT the car for me.

Granted there are some very fast WRX's, but it's not NEARLY as easy to make them fast as people seem to believe.

Re: WRX knowledge requested

I agree with stereomandan. There are some fast ones (A contractor on our site has one that dyno'd 396 at the wheels - No 1/4 mile slips though...), but most are mildly upgraded. And they do run out of breath due to areodynamics and drivetrain losses.

As in the days when Vettes lost to GN's up to 120MPH - If you lose, you didn't race long enough!

BTW, that contractor's WRX has a larger turbo, larger injectors, computer, exhaust, 100-wet shot, and he blends his own fuel. He's a former Formula Ford racer, so he's upgraded the suspension along with his rims and tires too. He runs 60% rear, 40% front on the power distribution.

He says, minus the rims/tires, it cost him less than the extra 5-6K it would have cost him to get the STI up front.

I'd imagine his fuel costs are a bear!
