What was the fastest factory F-body made?

Ive always been curious but but never have got a real answer.I'm talkking about production vehicles where you could get at most any dealership. The top three that come to my mind are the 92 Firehawk,97 LT4 SS or Firehawk,or the 02 Firehawk. All are about the same weight and have about the same horsepower and all are capable of running 12's with 3 completely different engines. From the info I know, the 92 Firehawk should go down as the fastest factory F-body ever made. What do you think?

Why would a no option Z28 be faster than an 02 Firehawk? The Firehawk came with the SLP exhaust,Ram Air,and came with the SLP airlid and was rated at 345 hp.Plus it had fat 275/40/17 tires.Granted, the Z may have been a little lighter but its rated 35 hp less.

Re: What was the fastest factory F-body made?

The '89 Turbo T/A was the fastest. I had the privilage of riding in one of those amazing cars last summer and my friend and I were beating LS1's (stock) EASILY My friends Turbo T/A, well, his dad's actually, is bone stock. Those car's make discusting Torque.

Ps.

GM's rating of 250HP/340 Torque are a joke. Those motor's are way under-rated (even more so than the LS1's)

Although they are fast, there not in the same class as the other 3.They were underrated from thr factory because of the corvette. They dyno about 260 horse(about 300 flywhel) and can run mid 13's from the factory.(13.4@102)A 6spd LS1 with a good driver will waste them.A little tweaks though, and there in the low 12's.

HP rating doesn't mean squat. A 01/02 LS1 (be it Z28, WS6, whatever) is going to put down 300-320 RWHP. A Firehawk will do little to no better - regardless of rating. A no-option Z is the lightest of all F-bodys. With the same HP, it will outrun the others.

89 TTAs were fast, but in 100% unaltered, bone stock condition, I never, ever heard of one running 12.89 @ 109 mph.

I'm not sure what a "big cube" version is (though I'mnot even sort of an expert on this subject). Here are the specs of the 92 Firehawk: http://www.firehawk.org/images/lit/1992/92back.jpg

On the sheet Bob posted, it says 13.2@107. PLENTY of LS1's have beaten that time stock. My vote goes for a Formula or Z28 as well. Firehawks and SS's tend to not hook as well at the track due to the suspension setup, and are usually heavier.

I have that issue of Car and Driver your referring to.They got 0-60 in 4.6 seconds as well. With 390ftlbs of torque,it probably roasted the tires all the way through 2nd.They also got a 13.9 out of a 98 6spd Trans Am,so go figure. There were also 3 92 Firehawks with 375 hp aluminum race engines. Those cars i'm sure would hand an LT4 Hawk or LS1 car its a$$.BTW,I'm still not convinced a 1LE Z is faster than a Firehawk,SLP made them to be the fastest F-bodys and you could get them with a torsen rear, short throw shifter, high flow airlid,as well as the standard ram air, fatter tires ,and catback exhaust.I dont think, the weight difference on a stripper(tops 150lbs)would make up that difference, but it would be close.

Re: What was the fastest factory F-body made?

Wasn't there some factory brickyard edition for some camaro's they made with slp in 2002? I read an article on them once(can't find it now of course), that said they came with about 405 hp, had the hp numbers on a dash plaque and everything. I think I remember that only about 50 or so were made though.

Re: What was the fastest factory F-body made?

What about this. I saw on a poster that had all the years of camaros up until 93, and the quickest one I saw was a '69 ZL1 that ran 11.7x's @ 122 I think, will have to do some research to check. Do those ZL1's count as factory, I wasn't for sure if GM had somebody make them or not.

Re: What was the fastest factory F-body made?

Something like 4 of the ZL1 versions were made. Not what I'd call factory available.

What about the COPO or Yenko version? 427, but an iron block instead of the aluminum that the ZL1 used.
