Thoughts? 1994 Z/28 vs 1997 Cobra

I have a buddy who has a 1997 Cobra, mods include: 18" wheels, Catback exhaust, !cats, and induction kit. Its a manual and I am not sure how well of a driver he is. Basically I am just wondering how I would fair if we ever raced. I am pretty confident I would walk him from a roll or stop, but just interested if anyone has come across a similar one. This is the SN95 style Cobra. Mods are in sig, no times yet.

He also plans to be all so original and S/C it by next summer, any idea what he'll run with some boost? I hope to have some H/C action by then to keep him at bay

I think he might edge you out.

Stock-for-stock a '96-'98 Cobra should beat an LT1. They make more power and they're a little bit smaller of a car.

Ok the Cobra scoots to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and has a top track speed of 152 mph. That compares favorably to a Camaro or Corvette.
The most significant difference between the Cobra and a regular Mustang GT is found in the engine compartment. Both have 4.6-liter V8s, but the Cobra uses a double-overhead-cam (DOHC) version that pumps out 95 more horsepower -- 305 versus 215. Our Lt1's are supposed to go from 0-60 in 5.7 sec. So I guess the win should go to whoever has better mods. The cobra came with a five speed unlike the M6 we got.
A cobra is like a mustang Gt taking steroids

yes your right, who ever has the most mods should take it. 97 cobra came with 305hp n with 300 torque. when i first got my ls1 stock i raced a 98 cobra stock n beat it easily. i also ran against a cobra who was modded highly too n it was a close race but i beat it by a half a car in length. i think the lt 1 comes with 275hp and 300 torque?

i would think you would have no problem at all with this cobra. all he has is induction and some exhaust work. no gears?..... with your mods, you should beat him. they sure do sound good though.........

You have long tube headers, 1.6 Roller Rockers, and a tune....and you're worried?? You should tear him a new one. Just don't spin on the launch.

LT1+Long Tubes = LS1 territory

I am not terribly worried, just thought I'd put it up for some healthy debate. He doesnt have any gears, but stock ones. BTW, not much spin off the line with my new tires/wheels. Up coming mods, ASP 23% crank pulley and E-WP will put him even further back. Thanks guys.

Re: Thoughts? 1994 Z/28 vs 1997 Cobra

i ran a 97 with full exhaust, cai, msd, manual.
both times i won. once from a 25 roll and then a 30 roll. first time he spun, next time we both dead hooked and i was slightly pulling then once i hit 60 in 2nd, i started pulling away and he let out!
my vote goes to you

WHen My Z was stock I beat a few cobra's. But I also had a freind with a 96 that had a catback, gears and CAI..the damn thing ran 13.3's all day long. Like LT1's some run better then others. But, With your mods you should have N/P beating him at all. You should have a 12 second car easily.

I would love to hit 12's, but I dont really expect to. I would be pleased with low 13's for now, but sadly chances are I'll do like mid 13's. Thanks.
