smoked a VR4
smoked a VR4
Tonight i was leaving work with my wife when i came across a newer mitsu vr4 at about 11:00. (we work a late shift at ups) Anyways i provoked him a little going up haven ave in Ontario. The street is 4 lanes wide and next to an airport 50mph limit. Its a very popular area to race. I sped up but let him stay in front in case of cops. At the light i get next to him and look over. he's just staring at the light and playing with his clutch because we're on a slight incline. the light turns green and i actually hear his tires squeal a little right before he bogs is down. i ran through second gear till 70 or so and put at least 50 feet on the guy. i never chirped my tires till i hit second gear. it was sweet because for once my wife did not say anything and just let me do my thing. I think she actually wanted me to lose because she's not a fan of going fast or any kind of racing. ( she's an off road gal.) My car is a ram air 93 trans am with hypertech, headers, high flow cat, borla and some other bolt ons. I also have granatelli lca's, panhard rods and sbc's which i think really help me launch. I'v only had the car for a couple months but i'm thinking its prolly as fast a stock ls1. Mid 13's or so. i'll know soon when i finally get it to a track. FYI the car is Black, not me.
I think You race a 3000 Gt Base Or SL
The Vr4 are very fast from a stop and can go close to 50 Mph in 1 gear and 80+ in 2 gear and only need like 5.3 sec to 60 Mph. in a stock car.
You say "actually hear his tires squeal" this is no easy to do in Vr4 is 4x4 all time, the Base is FWD and is more like to do this.
Alot of people used to put the Vr4 sticks in the base and SL 3000 Gt. Like a few M3 4 doors
WTF.
And 50 Ft win no sound right to a car wit 320 HP And 320+ Tq. Stock.
This cars were test stock for somes magazines and all were to 13.1 to 13.5 sec in the 1/4 mile.
I dont say you lie just I think the 3000 Gt was a base model.

If there was any sort of wheelspin that was not immediately followed by a 12-second 1/4 mile performance, it was not a VR4. If you launch a VR4 hard enough to spin the tires, it's impossible to then bog. Conversely, if you bog the launch, there's no way you're going to spin the tires.
I frequently get wheelspin on a hard launch, even with Potenza RE750's (245 in front, 275 in back). It's only for a split second though, then it still nails 60ft's in the 1.7x range. Stockish cars *might* be able to chirp the tires but nothing more.
Sounds like you ran into the SL model, which runs mid-15s.

I'm 100% sure it was a VR4. i actually heard his turbo's. he was just a crappy driver. or he was afraid of hurting his clutch. he tires squalled for a half second BEFORE he bogged it down.
I have something to add. I'm a subscriber to motor trend as well as automobile magazine. Motor trend tested the new mitsu evo to do a 4.6sec 0-60 and a 13.1 1/4 mile. Automobile mag a very reputable publication tested the same car a 5.6sec 0-69 and a 14.1 1/4 mile. Launching all wheel drive cars with small high horsepower engines is a test of nerve. Everone who drives one knows how fast it destroys a clutch in one of those cars. Automobile magazine killed the clutch in 10 months of driving the car on their 1 year test. It cost them 1200 to replace it. I personally think its stupid to build cars like that for the general public. The guy in the VR4 rolly spends twice as much as i do just serviceing his ride on regular maintenace.
Just so happens that last september i was on some state park roads outside of the detroit are. Motor trend was doing their ten best testing while i was there. I saw a sti, gto, Caddy ctsV etc... i know from my own personal experience that No one!! drives their personal cars as hard as motor trend editors.

What I was trying to say is that if you get wheelspin at launch in an AWD car, you're past the point of bogging it. You have already got the rpms up high enough and slipped the clutch properly to start the wheels spinning. Even on stock 245s that's a lot of traction to overcome, something you can't do if you're in the process of bogging the engine. There's a brief bit of wheelspin and then it's time to go.
Watch my launch in these videos (try to ignore the announcer that sounds like Jeff Foxworthy, and try to ignore the complete asswhooping I get from the Supra).

I can't think of a way I could make it bog down once the wheels were spinning.

What about if a guy heard the spinning, freaked and completely backed out of the throttle? Maybe it was a VR4 and the driver was just really horrible -- rev and dump clutch, panic and remove foot from gas pedal... would that duplicate what was reported?

Sorry to get off topic, but how do you like the 750's John? I'm running re0730's right now and luv em, but they aren't made anymore. I was thinking of the 750s as a replacement.
Thx,

The 750s are the replacement, and they're better in every way. Quieter, better tread wear, and still tons of traction wet or dry. I like 'em so much I also run them on my Grand Marquis
They're a poor man's S03 Pole Position - 90% of the performance at 50% of the price. My brother's 94 Supra (single turbo, etc) runs S03's on the rear and 750's on the front.

LMAO
He DOES sound just like Foxworthy! 11.77 @ 128.41 for the Supra, sad. Low 10sec potential
Impressive runs though John! I've always liked the looks of the VR4s
Jon
