SHO vs. Impalla SS (V6 version)

This was probably a '04 Impala SS, as it was definately the V6 version (I've seen the new V8 model around town as well). Extremely clean, white Impala SS.
Well, as I'm on my way home from work on Good Friday, with fewer cars on the road, there are more nutcases out there. Speed limit goes from 55 to 65 about a mile previous, but when people get to this one section of road, they slow to 50 due to the small hill and sweeping curve. I came up upon the SS just as the line of cars was clearing and the road goes from two lanes to four. He jumps to the left lane with me right behind. He went gradually to 80, saw me behind, and thought he could pull me to 100. Well...
As he hit 105, the next two lanes over cleared up. Since I had it in fourth anyway, I put on my signal and blew by him at 130+. I watched him start to pick up speed as I went past, but he had no chance. I kept it there for a few (maybe 10?) seconds, long enough for him to give it a try, but he didn't, so I took the next exit (about a mile up the road).
Anyway, a fun way to end the day! Especially after a long time with little opportunity!

Good kill. I had a 91' about 4 years ago. They are not slow at all for what they are. I've always wanted to get another one and put on regular Taurus bumpers and wheels just to play with the Ricers.

Yes, it's a 5-speed.
Well, he went up to 100 in a 65 with me crowding his bumper, and he didn't budge from the fast lane. Since the highway in question is fairly short (about 12 miles long), I doubt he was just planning on cruising at 100 for a while.

Yes, I'm on SHOforum as well, and posted this there too.

I'm still trying to find a way to work with my ISP to post my Lime-Rock run with the car - especially when I pass the 911 Carerra on the main straight! He finally gave me the point-by after I almost rear-ended him on the uphill.

Re: SHO vs. Impalla SS (V6 version)

I got the car properly aligned and the torque steer went away.
And that was before the Quaife!

I put the car back together again (Lower Control arm bushing had failed with 3,000 miles on it) and it doesn't wander down the road now.

:-)

Gas in town has finally gone above $3.00/gallon for Regular everywhere.

:-(

5-speed means shifting below 3,000 RPM at part throttle to save gas rather than waiting on an auto to pick when. It also allows me to go full throttle up hills in fifth without it downshifting.

:-)

The tough part is NOT opening up the secondaries (4,000 RPM, 80 MPH in fourth) when annoyed at some knuckleheaded driver.

Re: SHO vs. Impalla SS (V6 version)

Tank II,i have had my SHO for about 2 months now and it has been totally reliable(knock on wood)but i also ALWAYS shift at 2000-2500 because i am afraid something bad will happen like rod bearings going bad out of nowhere.I only paid $800 and the car is really nice and rust free but i have read SO many horror stories on the shoforum that i am afraid to beat on it at all.Have you done your rod bearings yet??If so how hard were they?

Re: SHO vs. Impalla SS (V6 version)

First engine - 196K miles, trips to redline almost every day, still ran fine (Good enough to run with a BMW 330I 60-110 twice in a row, and catch a BMW M at speeds above 100). Original bearings.
Current engine: 112K miles when I got it, had more torque due to previous owner's mishaps (Heads are now shaved). Main bearings (STD installed, OS required) were the wrong size, but I swapped them out and this one sees redline on a failry regular basis (not as much now). This is also the engine I used at Lime Rock.

I use 10W30 Synthetic Oil with 5K mile oil changes and Fram Tough Guard filters, though I am switching to conventional oil (3K mile changes) to stop a Cam seal leak (the one behind the sensor).

Pull the oil pressure switch and put a guage on it. If the numbers are good, don't worry. If you have concerns, Summit Racing can get you the bearings and gasket quickly and you can do this with a small set of tools and some ramps. About four hours taking your time.

I would pull one Main to see how it looks. The Rod bearings on the engine I put in were also replaced, albiet with the right size ones.

Re: SHO vs. Impalla SS (V6 version)

I have a 93 MTX SHO with about 155,000 miles on it. I LOVED that damn thing until some jeep ran a light & I T-Boned him doin about 25mph. It's in the process of being fixed right now (bought a donor car for $200). I drove the hell out of that thing for 3 years and it NEVER gave me a problem. VERY impressive engine, if you ask me. 3,850-7,300 will forever be my favorite RPM.
