Well last Saturday me and my bud went out in Z..
We just cruised for a while trying to get someone to bite that was worth the gas (
). It seems theres never any good contenders runnin around..
So we FINALLY come across this dark green(possibly black) 03 Cobra(manual). It was an older guy...gray hair...had his chick/wife with him...We chatted for a bit while sitting side by side at the light and he was telling us to "Be careful now guys"...which is OK i guess, he dont know us.
We finally get stuck together at the front of a light with no traffic and he asked what I had so I just told him "400 at the flywheel" and he thought I had said "400 at the wheels". I corrected him and he looked surprised. Then he told me he had "502 at the rear wheels". I got worried then, because up to this point I figured I had a good chance since I can drive pretty well, and have ran others cars that compare and havnt lost to anything yet except for a 1000HP Supra(I didnt know it, gimme a break)
So now Im kinda nervous because he said he has 500 to the wheels.
The light turns and I push it just a little to get him to floor it and he does, I slowly roll into WOT in first and make up the car lead I gave him.(I always let the opponent get the jump because I hate it when they bitch that you cheated, blah blah blah) At this point both of us are giving it everything...his charger was whining like CRAZY....when I shifted he would gain a fender and I would reel it right back in, then it was already time for another shift. I shut down right before I had to shift into fourth and I was about half a car ahead.
So he does the "throw-on-the-brakes-and-turn-off" BS. I was like WTF? I wanted to ask him if he really had 500 to the wheels because I should not have won. I was all happy because that was the first Cobra I have got to race that wasnt just a quick 0-80 or 20-80 punch.
So now Im all hyped up and we head over to to I-10 & HWY 6 spot at Sam's to meet up with my other buddy who we always meet up with. He used to have an '03 Z06...yellow. I pull up and he standing there but his car is nowhere to be seen. I ask him "What happened, wheres your car man?"
He pointed to the red Z06 parked next to me. So as it turns out he traded in his old Z06 for this one because it has chrome rims, red inserts on the interior, and custom painted red stuff under the hood. We chat for a while and the crowd starts to dwindle. His son (hes like 13, know quite a lot about cars for a 13 year old) starts telling us about this new place where people have started racing. So we head out there and it DEAD...nobody at all. So we both we like "Well, see ya next Saturday" and then I look, and we are both lined up at the starting line, me on the left and him on the right. So I said "Hey, since we didnt get to see any racing...wanna run for fun?" He says OK and his son is getting this big smile on his face(I dont think his dad races much)
We agreed on me doing the 3-honk. Go ON the 3rd honk.
As always, I let him get the jump, so theres no arguement. If there was a 4th honk, that would be when I went. So he goes and I catch up real fast(still in 1st). I was rolling into WOT, like I always do. This time, I was puling on him worse than on the Cobra I raced earlier. I was so excited...everything was happening so fast, I screwed up the 2-3 shift(did the same against the Cobra...
) but he still didnt pull up next to me. I stayed ahead of him the whole time. Like I said I was so excited, I threw on the brakes around 110-120 i guess, which was too soo, because we could have kept going for another couple seconds before the road ended. I kindof robbed him because I suspect he would have reeled me in on that last part. I feel bad because I really didnt mean to brake early, but I didnt see him next to me so I thought we were done, I didnt think he wasnt there because I was beating him still, I thought he had braked and quit.
Im going to get him to run again this Sat. at the same spot if theres not anyone there again...What sucks it I hated beating him because hes a really cool guy and I dont want him to question the power of his Z06. I didnt expect to see anything but tail lights.
Whats wierd is if you look at my sig, I shouldnt be able to keep up with these two cars....I bought the car around Jan. It had the 4.11's already, nothing else. The previous owner returned it to stock, because I can see the notches they made for the LTs. I got it with the stock exhaust and everything on it.
Which makes me wonder....do I have ported heads or something? The guy is on his second Z06 so I think he knows how to drive. My car doesnt idle smooth, but isnt too choppy, either...so it COULD have a slightly better cam than stock, although there no way for me to know. Im waiting for a dyno day here in Houston so I can pin this down and see what I've got.
BTW the Z06 was completely stock, even the exhaust(verrrry quiet)
Should I be able to reel him in like that? I mean he went and got at least a car from the get-go, and I reeled that back in almost instantly and kept pulling the whole time. I dont know how bad I was pulling on him because once I passed him all I know is he wasnt next to me and I wasnt checking my mirrors to see where he was.
Anyways, he pulls up next to me and says "You braked a hair too soon" I said "I know, I didnt mean to... wanna go again?" We both were silent and we both pretty much understood the racing was over. He said "Damn youve got a nice setup there" We exchanged goodbyes and went our seperate ways home.
I cant wait to see him this Sat. and ask him what he thinks, and see if he wants to go from 0-140 or so and see what happens(if he knows a good spot for that)
Im afraid hes not going to like me anymore or something because I know it would **** me off to lose to a 'lesser' car. I'll see Sat.....

Im going to take it with me Sat. and see if he wants to run and tape it.
What confuses me is the Cobra was a better race than the Z06...the Cobra I was trying as hard as I could and we pretty much were even the entire time untill the end. With the Z06, he shot out there and I reeled him in and passed him, and I was just trying not to screw up, I wasnt trying to get every last drop of performance out of it. I actually drove better against the stang.
I need a dyno....very freaking soon, too. I wish I could contact the previous owner and find out what it has. Arrrrgh!

Catching and pulling a Z06? It's not stock, that's for sure
Just a guess, but since this is essentially a race from a roll, your car should be doing 400+ RWHP.

Believe me guys, there nothing I would like to do more than get a dyno...if MTI dont do a Dyno Day soon, Im going to have to pay full price and just go ahead nd do it...
I think everyone will agree that everyone always suspects/hopes deep in the back of their mind tht theres something special about their car.
I hope my suspicions are correct because thats a lot of crap that I dont have to do....
I could then concentrate on other things like wheels/tires and sound system. I have dedicated myself to performance-only spending until I crest 400rwhp....I'll be happy if I dyno even close to that....but then the question woud be, "what the heck do I have?"

Maybe I could go to the DMV or something and ask for it. I have a Carfax and all it says is it was originally owned by GM, then sold to an employee, then I bought it from a Dealer who bought it at a GM Auction. It never gives names...just mileage at each particular sale and averge mileage. Im gonna call the dealer tomorrow and see if I can get some answers....maybe I can actually locate this guy....

Good Luck,,I just usually found this info on other used cars I bought, just by searching under the seats, glove box sometimes I would find something with their name on it. You could try the dealer and see what happens just explain your situation,,maybe they can help.

if you raced to 110-120 thats a bit passed a 1/4 mile so i dont see why you should have to race him to 140, or why he said you braked to early, you obviously would beat him at the track.

yeah but we are sorta friends and its like an unwritten rule that if theres more room to run then we should. We're not just interested in 1/4 mi.....thats good info but I like to run'em as fast as possible just to see whats happens....ya know?
BTW the Z06 guy didnt show this Sat which is odd...him and his son are always there...I think hes mod'in up for a rematch I guess. I dont blame him, I would, too.
He will be back next weekend probably. BTW I met up with two pretty cool Camaro dudes (1 LT1 & 1 LS1) and chatted up...The LS1 guy had a 224/228 114 cam (a4) and he must have tuned it perfect because I heard virtually zero lope. He runs high 11's BTW....
He said he only runs at the track but eventually we'll run(once I get more mods)
There was supposed to be a group of 150+ 'Stangs cruisin the streets Sat night(Annual car club thing..) but I never had the pleasure of coming across anything but a nitroused V6 Stang (pre-99)....I didnt even bother because I had little gas and he was acting like a tough guy...so I just let him go on and be...well...."Mr. Tough Guy". Someone is gonna rip him a new one one day when he does that ****. I didnt feel it was worth it....it was on Westheimer(not a good street to race on...
