Ran down a new SRT-4 on the 5 freeway

Merging onto 5 South off the Del Mar Heights Rd on-ramp coming home from work, I merge a couple lanes over, pick up speed to flow with traffic and spot a silver SRT-4 in the lane next to the fast lane.

I saw him speed up in my mirror when he saw me, however I was increasing my speed as well so I got over into his lane in front of him and cruised for about 1/4 mile because of traffic.

I drop the transmission from OD into 3rd and watch the rpms climb to ~3k, incase he wants to play.

Instantly my stomach gets butterflies , I've always wanted to run one, will I finally get my chance?! I can't help but crack a big grin as I see the hood scoop in my rearview mirror and notice him pacing me at about 80 mph behind me (traffic in the 2 left lanes was moving pretty well at that time). Then I remember hmmn, 1/4 tank of gas, nitrous bottle at home because I just had the car smogged and didn't want to take a chance. Oh well it will have to be a naturally aspirated run!

He floors it and goes flying past me all the way over into the right lane. I floor it and follow him, then some more cars are merging into our lane as we pass the Carmel Valley Rd on-ramp.

I pull up about 2 cars behind him, car still in 3rd, ready to drop the hammer, both of us waiting for an opening in the next lane, if we can get over there's plenty of room for a good run. During this time I notice the car is brand new - no license plate, simply a "Thousand Oaks Auto Mall" placard inplace of the license plate.

"HA!" I thought to myself, "I get to run a stock one and see what these things can REALLY do!" At this point I'm so excited I can't stand it

FINALLY we pass a slower car in the next lane to the left and he floors it. I was waiting and as soon as he hit it, I hammered the accelerator to the floor.

I watched the MPH gauge climb as I kept an eye out for cops and realized I was gaining on this guy. I got up close to his bumper and pulled over to the left to pass him.

Even though there wasn't enough room for me to get in front of him due to traffic up ahead, I wanted him to see me pulling even with him and to hear the cut-out (and not to be a dick and give him a thumbs up).

All of a sudden the run was cut short as traffic at the 5-805 split was stopped on the 5 side, we both slowed down as quickly as possible and I threw him a thumbs up as I passed him (his lane came to a complete stop, I moved over and headed for 805 since it seemed to be moving better that way).

What a rush that was! So good run to the silver SRT-4, nice to know a bolt-on LT1 can pull on a stock one. Mods in sig (minus the nitrous of course)

Very nice run dude; do you think you could have taken him if you had a longer unobstructed path?

Definitely. I started from behind him when we both hit it and was pulling up to him. I almost pulled even in the next lane over to the left of him before we had to stop due to oncoming traffic. If we had started even I probably would've put about a car and a half on him before we had to shut down.

Props for taking him out with so few bolt ons. I took out a modded one with fewer bolt on's than you see in my sig. It felt good shutting him up. Great race. They always see to "stomp" LS1 Vettes and Z/28's and Cobra's then the old LT1 puts the smack down.

Well written story. I almost felt like I was in the passenger seat laughing at the SRT-4 when you caught him.

Aww, picking on a green engine and new owner of a SRT-4! That's my "how you were faster than a SRT-4" excuse for this post.

everybody knows any four banger with a turbo is unbeatable...in fact when one turbo 4 cylinder runs another they always tie...because they can't be beat...

They must always tie 03/04 cobras cause those cant be beat either. And always remember that if you own an lt1 you will never beat and ls1 no matter what.
