New Mustang GT
I'm rolling off the light when this new Mustang GT vert. with a yuppie looking guy pops out from a side street. He gets next to me at about 25 and nails it. There's no traffic ahead so I punch the Z.
First gear I stop his pull, second gear I clear almost three, and by the top of third he's a spot in my rearview. At the next light he gets in a turn lane and doesn't get up next to me. A dude in a Silverado that was behind us caught up at the light. I heard him yell "You got worked!" to the the Mustang driver.

Re: New Mustang GT
i dont see how you smoke a 300 hp mustang gt. Im not saying you didnt, im just curious why these gts get spanked all over. Whats wrong with those cars? they are suppose to be faster than lt1s but everyone "seems" to be smoking them.

Re: New Mustang GT
the GT's gained some power but the good ol boys at ford added some weight to them too! I can't weight to bust a 07 shelby's *** on the street!!! 3900lbs without the driver!!! WTF is Ford thinking.

Re: New Mustang GT
They might be 300HP but there are a good bit of reasons their not as qucik as an LT1 car.
1) STOCK LT1 cars are far and few between. Most have at least a CAI and full exhaust on them by now ...
2) As said, Mustangs gears pretty much suck. Always have, and always will.
3) Mustangs are HEAVY. A stock GT weighs more than a convertible model LT1 car does.
4) OHC motors ... They are made to wind out a bit more than an LT1 does. Combine this with bad gears and you get a sluggish 300HP car.
5) No replacement for displacement ...
Nothing beats cam-in-block knuckle dragging technology for gobs of tourque, and a much wider power band.
The LT1 cars on the other hand are
1) Most of them, NOT stock
2)Geared pretty well from the factory with the exception of 2.73 cars
3) Around 3400-3600 lbs so not too heavy.
4) Cam in block ( Isn't this the only way a muscle car should be?)
5) More displacement, more low end, wider broader TQ curve and just as much top end power ...

Re: New Mustang GT
Mustang: 8.66 lbs x 16gal = 138 lbs + 200 lbs driver + options(?)
I hear the extra HP only kicks in near peak RPMs'
How much did base camaros, no fuel, no options weigh? 3400? W/ a broader curve? What hardcorerm125 posted seems spot on regarding torque/gears too.
I guess it holds true that most camaros are likely not stock any more... making the difference seem bigger as well.

LT1 Cars:
Shipping Weight (I would imagine this includes oil etc. because they fire an engine up before they ship it out to a dealership)
1993 Z28 3,373 Lbs
1994 Z28 3,424 Lbs
1994 Z28 Convertible 3,524 Lbs
1995 Z28 3,390 Lbs
1995 Z28 Convertible 3,480 Lbs
1996 Z28 3,466 Lbs
1996 Z28 Convertible 3,593 Lbs ( No Specs for SS, sorry)
1997 Z28 3,433 Lbs
1997 Z28 Convertible 3,589 Lbs
LS1 Cars:
Shipping Weight
1998 Z28 3,433 Lbs
1998 Z28 Convertible 3,589 Lbs
1999 Z28 3,446 Lbs
1999 Z28 Convertible 3,565 Lbs
2000 Z28 3,439 Lbs
2000 Z28 Convertible 3,574 Lbs
2001 Z28 3,439 Lbs
2001 Z28 Convertible 3,574 Lbs
2002 Z28 3,439 Lbs
2002 Z28 Convertible 3,574 Lbs
These were the GM Factory shipping weights of the cars. I am not sure what all is included in the shipping weight. But I would bet my life on it that there is full fluids and near empty tank of gas. They make sure the cars run before they ship them out to dealerships.
These figures were taken from "Standard Catalog of Camaro" by John Gunnell. Im not sure how accurate they are, but they kind of bust that myth of LS1 cars being significantly lighter than an LT1 based car. Also shows that a convertible is not the pig everyone thinks they are.

Re: New Mustang GT
C&D had the curb weight listed as something like 3550 lbs for the 2005 Mustang GT. I forget exactly what it was. But now that I think about it curb weight is with a full tank too I believe so maybe their not so heavy ...
Someone should look up the weights on C&D's web site for the Mustangs and Camaros to confirm things. Its too late for me ... I need sleep lol.
