How fast are these supposed to be?
I've had a few people around me saying how nice these are, etc, but I've had one encounter with one and it proved to be amazingly slow.
it was the typical two lanes becoming one, and we both wanted to go first, he took off first with a sound that told me he was trying to accelerate hard, but as soon as I downshifted I jumped ahead and pulled him like he was a civic. I suspect he stopped trying as soon as I got ahead of him, but still, it was very disappointing.
I assumed these were expensive / fast cars, is there an economy version or something?

They are slow. I raced one with my Lincoln Mark 8 LSC. It has 290hp stock and we were neck and neck until about 80 mph when I start to edge him out. The Mark 8 is about a low 15 to very high 14 sec car.
I even raced an AMG version of one these in the Vette and killed him good.

I'm not going to speak from experience here since I don't havea ny in the field of street racing newer Mercedes, but on paper they look like they aren't anything to play with. Most are well over 300 hp despite being relatively heavy. Seems like they would be pretty damn quick, maybe I'm wrong?

that's not one of those; I found what it was: the SLK roadster;
then the specs explain why it was so slow:
2.3L displacement double overhead cam (DOHC), inline 4 cylinder configuration gas engine, 16 valves variable valve timing, supercharger 192 hp @ 5500 rpm, 200 ft-lbs. @ 2500 rpm premium unleaded fuel
btw, the SL 65 doesn't look like a roadster, the SLK does...

as a 2002 c230 owner... they are "slow"... and the 2003 c230's have a 1.9L (same hp/tq ratings though)... my car would run a mid to high 15 on a good day... didn't buy it cuz it was a speed demon, bought it cuz it has a 4 year 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warr. + ALL services included, it also handles rather well and is WAY better built than the chevy's, fords, mopars, nissans, bmw's and even honda's we test drove... but that's just my thoughts...
