me vs talon

well I was coming home tonight around 10pm on the highway. I was cruising about 5 mph faster than the flow of traffic (approx 75) and passing everyone. I had never ever raced before and figured everyone in my area was in their 60s and drove buicks so I just had the cruise on and was relaxing.

After I pass this one car it pulls out behind me and rides my rear end. I bumped the cruise up a bit to 80 and he was still on my rear. so I pull over into the right lane to let him pass. he pulls up along side me and pretty much stays even with me. By now im thinking to myself "does this guy want to race?" I shut off the cruise and then brought it up to 85 mph.

there were no cars in front of me for a good 2 mile straight stretch with no exits/entrances onto the freeway. So I thought what the heck, I'll get on it. I floored it and to my surprise he got on it too. at first we were about dead even with me being ahead by about my hood length. I started pulling ahead and by the time I hit about 120 I was up nearly 2 car lengths.

After this I had to pull out in front of him to pass some cars that were a bit ahead and also to take some gradual corners so I coasted down to about 90 mph with him riding my rear still. I wanted to see what he could do with me trailing him so I got in the right lane and he flew by me. I got on it and started catching up again slightly up till about 110 mph. I saw some traffic up ahead and decided to play it safe and back off.

It was very exciting to say the least, I found out after we both got off on the same exit that it was an eagle talon. I have no idea what year and I don't know much about this car. I was VERY impressed by how it ran. My car isn't really fast but its got good top end because of the 2.73s. This little talon kept up with me the whole time.

I must say though I am now fascinated by these things.
What is in these cars to make them move like that? Do you think he had any modifications done? I just cant get over how that little thing ran. I always thought they were FWD econoboxes with a bit of a sporty exterior. Have any of you ever gone up against them? I've seen some at the drags but never watched them run. I figured they ran like all the other hondas and VWs that were there. I gotta learn more about these things.

If theyre FWD, run like that with little modification, and are good in the snow I think I may have found a good 2nd car for those snowy winters

You have seriously never seen a car that's been around for 14+ years now?

I have seen them. It's just that I never took notice of them. One of my dad's friends bought a black one about 8-10 years ago. I was impressed by the 160 mph speedo at the time. I didnt know that they were pretty fast.

The non-turbo versions are just that, slow FWD cars that present the image of speed while not being fast at all. The turbo models, however, can be extremely potent with little mods invested. The best way to look at it is like a V6 Camaro and a Z28; the V6 has the sporty look but isn't very fast, while we all know that the Z28 is the true peformance model.

I did some more research on them. I do belive I'll look into buying an AWD one for winter days. Are they reliable vehicles?

Weak drivetrain? I never broke anything in 10 years of DSM ownership. It's all about driving it sanely vs. thinking it can withstand a 7k rpm clutch sidestep.

90-91s have a weaker rear end & axles. After that it's solid until well over double the stock HP.

You'll have to remember that they're 10-14 years old so in the beginning you'll have to spend some cash to get it into shape. Most people just put gas (and hopefully oil) in and drive till they quit. Once you do bring the maintainance up to speed it should be very reliable.

Like they always say: Fast, Reliable, Cheap - you can have any two of the three you want.
