LT1 vs s2000, round II

Last summer, I had a chance to race a stock s2000 against my mostly stock (cut out only) 94 z28 from a dig. it was no contest - i was ahead by a number of lengths.

yesterday, a s2000 rolled up next to me on the freeway and I gave him a thumbs up and asked if he wanted to run. He knodded yes and we started from a 100kph (60mph) roll. he had a passenger and his tops up, i had my t-tops down and was bymyself. i downshifted into 3rd and as soon as i saw him hit it, i did the same and seemed to instantly get a length on him. 4 gear saw another 2 lengths, at which point, he slipped in behind me. i jammed it into 5 for a bit and by this time, we came upon traffic and i let off.

We got off at the same ramp and chatted for a bit. He asked me what I had and seemed surprise when i told him i just had a cut out and CAI. He was stock except for an exhaust system.

Overall, I was pretty happy, considering that most ppl tell me that s2000 > LT1's. So im 2 for 2 against them! woohoo.

Mike.

Good job on the victory.

According to Car and Driver mag, a stock S2000 is a bit slower in a drag race, but faster on a road course. The S2000 has a very high-strung and peaky engine, whereas the LT1 is a lot more forgiving. Also, the S2000 would suffer more of a performance hit with extra weight (i.e. a passenger). I wouldn't try to take that guy on in the twisties, though!

Good run!

Ye, in toronto there are a few fast s2000's. In fact, my business partner owns the car ultimate racing used to prototype their turbo kit for s2000's. ive driven it.. pretty fast. its a mid 12 sec car on street tires allegedly.

Re: LT1 vs s2000, round II

depends on the roadcourse. have you seen the car and driver comparison at road america with steve millen driving all of the cars? the z28 ss was faster than the s2k and less than half a second slower than the nsx. i dont have an ls1 (so im down a bit of hp compared to the car in the test), but i have more suspension goodies. heheeh.

short tight track = s2000 > camaro
big track (ie. mosport), ill put my money on the camaro given equal drivers.

Good kill, a guy around here thinks his S2000 runs mid 13's stock and 12's modded, but he's never been to the track, so who knows?

Hey dave, just noticed your signature.. sounds like you have a pretty sweet motor setup. do you mind me asking who built the engine for you? im in the southern ontario area too, and just wanted to get an idea of who some trustworthy builders are.

sure the cars when modded with a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous have the power for the 12's, but Ive only seen one video of a 12 sec s2k. They have pretty weak rear ends and do not take kindly to launching, even on stock tires. From a roll I'm sure its an animal, but otherwise I'm not impressed.

My motor was built by a local guy (Chris) who does double duty: He's the lead (and my personal ) mechanic at the local Chevy dealer by day, and he runs a small performance shop (with his wife) by night. He takes on engine build-ups basically one-at-a-time, i.e. starting a new engine only after finishing the one he's on. In his spare time, he dragraces his 900+ hp N.A. small-block race car.

It took lots of time and money including extensive machining work, and all the headwork that Chris put into it, along with the hours I spent pouring over this board researching components, but it was all worth it in the end. The car runs flawlessly and is strong - I'm very happy with it.

My engine builder is located about 1/2 way between Windsor and T.O. I can PM you contact info if you'd like.

Hi Dave,

Pls PM me his info. I dont think (or hope) that I will have to do a rebuild this season, but I will chat with Chris when the time comes.

Thanks,

Mike.
