LT-4 Vette Goes Down

Me and my buddy were coming back from lunch today when a silver LT-4 Vette pulls up next to us. We recognize the Vette as the one that has been parked at work the last couple weeks. I had never raced a Corvette up to this point, because most Vette's around here are C-5's and their owners are wussies. We played around a little bit, getting behind each other and hammering it and such, doing some flybys. A couple minutes later we both turn onto the road where our work is. We line up at a 20 MPH roll. I wait for him to punch it, because I didn't want any excuses if he lost. He nails it and I go for it and spin a little. He has a 3/4 car jump on me, and we both nail second gear. I begin reeling him in. Hit 3rd and I begin pulling harder. At the top of third gear, just as I am getting ready to pass him, he lets off, stripping me of my glory. I know he was being safe, but nonetheless I felt shortchanged. I was pulling good and I know that I could beat him every time. Hopefully later this week we can go from a dig and see what happens. By the way, the passenger load in my car exceeded his by about 150 pounds. But then again, his car was bone stock and mine isn't. It still feels good to know that my lowly Camaro can pull on a top-of-the-line in 1996 Corvette(Yeah, yeah, I know a ZR-1 would eat me alive). Thanks for reading this long post. Oh yeah, does anyone know what an LT-4 runs in the 1/4. What about a ZR-1????

The LT4 came in all '96 Vette's with a 6spd. Our LT4 GS ran the 1/4 bone stock at 13.1@109mph. Slow of the line but my mid track is really movin! We have since added a hotcam and it hasn't been back to the track since.

Thanks for posting that 1/4 mile time. I guess those LT-4 Vette's were about comparable to a C-5. That's awesome. I hope you get some good numbers next time you're at the track. The Hotcam is an awesome street cam. I'm sure you'll love it.

Motor Trend has the ZR1s between 13.6 at 106 to 12.8 at 112 depending on the year and ringer or not. So it depends which car you come across. You may beat them!

Re: LT-4 Vette Goes Down

Interesting. From looking at the 1/4 mile times, an LT-4 and ZR-1 are fairly close. I would think that with a ~65 HP advantage the ZR-1 would easily destroy an LT-4 Vette. I haven't seen any ZR-1's running around lately, but if I come across one I'll do my best to arrange some "testing". There are tons of Porsche's, Ferrari's, and other high-end cars running around here. I think it's time to order that 150 wet kit and surprise some of the locals. I could cruise past the Ferrari dealership and catch someone on a test drive. Show them wht their getting for their 100K+. Yes, I see it now in my crystal ball. BWAHAHAHHHAAAAAAA.

The ZR1 motor is overrated a little, the LT4 is underrated. The ZR1 also weighs a couple hundred pounds more than the LT4 Vette.

I have heard that they aren't very impressive from a stop, which makes sense, tq is listed at 340 @ 3600 so most of the power is up top. Right there with the LS1 & LS6 Vettes from a roll but from a dig the LT5 will lose.

If I ever have the dough to get a ZR1, I'll make sure to get this - but with a supercharger

Re: LT-4 Vette Goes Down

You might find that if you race beyond 100 mph that the Vette may edge you out (if he can drive).

Good to see that everyone has all the facts straight.

Re: LT-4 Vette Goes Down

I doubt you'll ever race a 96 ZR1 since they stopped making them in 95. That said, they don't do well from a dig, but on the free way, they are crazy. Good run though.

Damn, over $30k for 600 HP. I'll pass ! I'd build an all aluminium LS-6 427 first ! geeeez.

Re: LT-4 Vette Goes Down

Not to burst your bubble, but how do you know it was an LT4?They are indistinguishable from an LT1.If it was a silver collector and its a 6spd,then its an LT4,if its an auto than it was an LT1.Did you see what tranny it had when it was parked? All auto vettes in 96 were LT1's.LT4 vettes were actually underrated from the factory(because of the C5) at 330 hp and put down between 290-310 rear wheel horsepower(about 350 flywheel horsepower)and can run high to mid 12's with a good driver and dragradials.

Ours dynoed at 311rwhp.....they aren't made for drag racing though. Thats for sure! Slow off the line, but by mid track she is chuggin!
