LS1 Camaro vs. 3rd Gen Trans Am Turbo

I was crusing around the town, just for the heck of it because of bordom, and when I was heading home I saw this old school TA come out of know where and starts getting on my a$$. Well for a couple of lights he stays behind me bc of all the traffic, and each time we start out he falls back and then comes zooming up to me. Well I started to get sick of it, so i cut threw a couple of cars and then he does the same. We finnally get to a light where its just the two of us, and the light turns green and we take off. My car did a big fish tail, but i was still in the lead by a little bit. At about 50 or 60, my car starts pulling away and then leaves him in the dust. After that race we catch another light and he says lets try this again so i can beat u. Well for some odd reason, instead of looking at the light, i look at his car. Well the light turned green and he took off, and got a good start on me. Within a couple of secs, i start catching him and then just pull away. I was really supprised on how those little 6 cyl turbo TA put up a great race. Well thanks for reading this post, and i hope u enjoyed it

Nice Kill! They were definitely awesome in their day, but no match for an LSX

Just be thankful he was stock. There are two ways to maintain a turbo TA: stock for collector value, and built to hell for azz kickin.

I would argue that it is a driver's race.

Sure it was really a TTA, and not just a white GTA or TA? I would not think a lid/catback A4 LS1 would easily pull/pass even a stock TTA that got what sounds like a very solid jump. Could have been a dead stocker in poor tune or something I guess, but still...

Turbo Trans Ams are no joke. Make no mistake about that. They are stealthier than T-Types, because everyone assumes they are white GTAs. They dont see the "TURBO" badges on the fenders and rear. They are also a full second faster than thier Buick conterparts, compliments of aerodynamic advantage. They also handle and stop better than a Turbo Regal.

A club member of our's just traded his Typhoon for a TTA. It has run 11.3s ON RADIALS. It is modified, but still streetable. Most people collect these cars. Some race them. Julio Don, of Alky Control has one. It went a best of 10.90 @ 124 at Bowling Green this year, running on pump gas with methanol injection. He drove it there from Florida on M/T ET Street Radials, and drove it home. He makes the best alky system for cars, period.

Just wanted to educate everyone.

After i beat the guy on the first race, i asked him if he did anything to the car. He said that he upgraded the turbo, or changed it(dont know for sure which one), but that was about it. He also said he just got the car from his dad, in which he bought it brand new. The car only had 32k on it. He did get a good jump on the sec run but i caught him and blew him away. My car is running in the mid 13 bc i did do a couple of the free mods that i didnt put in sig yet(Home made ram air system). And yes iam positive it was a TTA because it had the badges on it and could here the turbo kick in.

I don't doubt your story, but it just doesn't fit. I know stranger stuff happens, but either the car is really messed up or the guy can't drive at all. A good running TTA with a decent driver would be as fast as you, maybe even faster.

Re: LS1 Camaro vs. 3rd Gen Trans Am Turbo

He did say that he just got it a couple of weeks ago from his dad. Anyway, it was a very nice car and when he pulled next to me i thought he was going to win. The reason why i won could be that when my car was pulling away little by little at around 40-80ish he cutt it off and waited for the next light. I dont know what would have happend if he stayed on it, he would have probaly caught back up. But it was a great race and so was his car.

BTW, That TTA in the vid was not 100% stock.

myfirst99Z28 - Nice kill.

But just remember that for the price of your lid, a TTA can easily be put in the 12's

Most likely the car was out of tune.
Could be any number of things, but a TTA is going to run low-mid 13's bone stock if it's in good running condition.
A chip, adjustable wastegate, AFPR and a Scanmaster and it will get into the mid-12's.
Throw in some good gas, crank up the boost, and it'll go faster.
Really neat cars.

I don't believe you could get a stick in the TTA's. I think all were autos.....

My guess is bone stock and no knowledge of how to drive the car for best ET. A simple chip, octane and sticky tires and you're toast. They can go wickedly fast for little dough, but many leave them bone stock for collector value.
