Just got beat by a stock 97 SS
Well, to say the least I'm kinda pissed. Was going home tonight and turning right at an intersection in town. The turning lanes just got there green light and as I'm waiting for a blazer to pass I see the next car (a white camaro) flash his lights at me. I then caught a glimpse of chrome wheels so I knew it was a buddy of mine. I pull out, we get side by side and punch it from about a 30 roll. We stay neck and neck for a while and then he just pulls hard. Not to mention my tranny shifts HARD and things start to smell bad (literally). It could have just been the heat which was on, and not something worse (hopefully). Anyway as stated above I'm pissed. As far as mods go I should have had him. Not only has my tranny been acting up lately but my MAF died about a month ago so that could have made the difference (not excuses they are actually acting weird). Just figured I'd write about it to clear my mind

If he had a good running LT1 6spd SS its very possible hed run you from a roll , but he wouldnt just run away, it would be more like inchin away, think your buddys bs'in or recently got some new mods...or your cars not runnin good...some LT1 SS's dyno higher then base models

Theres no reason that he shouldn't have been able to win. His SS came with ram air which is equivelant to a CAI and it came with a 3 inch exhaust already...those are the only mods you have that would matter for the most part. That race should come down to driving.
Re: Just got beat by a stock 97 SS
His SS was an A4 also and I'm positive he's never modded it. It just got insurance on it (again) and he spends his "car money" on his '67 maro. I just figured with my gears, exhaust, and intake I would pull on him, at least up top. At least I'm over it now. Acceptance is the first step, plus it's getting me eager for more mods

You have to retune the car is you change the MAF? I haven't changed it yet (stocker is dead), but planned on replacing it with another stock MAF. Would this need a retune? I figured they were all set-up the same and the computer would recognize it and make and changes if necessary.

The outcome seems to fit...
Given that you've likely got MAF issues and that you both essentially have a CAI/Exhaust (also remember that LT1 SS's ram-air design actually works compared to the LS1 SS ram air design).
Your 3.42's will only give you little if any advantage over his 3.23 stock gears (Auto SS's come equipped with 3.23 perf ratio)
Take care of the MAF gremlins and you should fare better.
