How much more traction will 245/50R16 tires give me than 225/55R16s?
How much more traction will 245/50R16 tires give me than 225/55R16s?
I am running new 225/55R16 rear tires on the street. The car spins most of 1st gear and half of 2nd on the street. If I switch to 245/50R16s on the rear how much more traction will I have?

Just buy u a set of 245 Nitto's. I run them on my car all the time on the street and the traction always seems to be there and thats with a stall converter. They are pretty decent in the rain and springs is just around the corner so why not???

in the snow and ice, right? So I can't run them in winter? So you guys think a 245 tire won't give me much more traction than a 225 tire?

I think this is in the wrong area but anyway......A 245 tire will give more traction than a 225, maybe not noticeably more , but still more. If you're going to upgrade anyway you should go as big as you can afford if you want traction. If you only want a 245 tread width tire then to maximize traction get the stickiest tire you can.
Not to hijack the thread but when you guys say you have nitto's, do you mean the NT555R drag radial? If so, what kind of wet traction do you get? Is it scary in the rain? Also, how long do a set of those last?

If you're on stock wheels, you may not be able to go wider than 245s anyway. Also, some brands' 245 are physically wider than others, even though they're supposed to be the same.

245's won’t give you enough traction for your GT...If I were you I would go with Nittos Drags. I was afraid of them, cuz I read about some problems in the rain. But that’s BS, they are very good (if not better), in the rain than any other tire (when they aren’t bold!!). They will wear out faster, but they will be good for one spring/summer/fall till the next snow. And the best part is that they are GREAT sticky tires. You will Love them!!! It will be your best mod!!

245s will give you a 9 % increase (compounds being the same) in traction.
Let's say you go to 295s, that would be a 31% increase.
IMO going up 20 mm is like doing a gear swap up one size only, there will be a difference but just enough to leave you wanting more. Unless you have a special attachment to your rims, something bigger than 245s would be better. I know 245s don't do my car any justice. The only alternative is sticky compounds that wear out fast.
