Thumbs up Got killed by an Omni!

Last time I went to the track was for the Eastern Michigan Camaro Club at Milan last Thurs. I beat some and lost to others. I didn't mind loosing since it was to 10 second cars but there is one that even though I know more money and time went into it than my car it still bugs me since it was a 80 somthing Dodge Omni!

I know there is a whole group of fans of this car that have built them up and I give them a lot of respect, but freakin a, it was an Omni.

Here's the timeslip from the race:

#19 #40 (me)
+.090-----Reaction-----------+.624
1.989----------60 ft-------------2.230
5.564--------330 ft-------------5.982
8.522---------1/8 et------------9.006
82.60---------1/8 mph---------82.41
11.088-------1000' et---------11.543
13.263------1/4 et------------13.674
102.46-------1/4 mph--------105.40

I'm not gona make excuses, he won, even if I didn't spin my tires and ran my best time of the night of 13.464 @ 105.61mph I still wouldn't have won. But I do have a set of Headers and a shift kit, sitting next to me right now and I'm looking for a set of nittos. Hopefully they will help me catch up.

Oh yeah, this thread is useless without vids so here it is.

Omni VS Z28

I'm not the best at drag racing as this was my second time to the track so my reaction is horrible so spare me the "Your reaction time was horrible"

Man your reaction was horrible ha ha ha j/k . But if you would have had a quicker one you probably would have won. Get those mods thrown on and let us know how it goes the 2nd time around.
13.6 1/4, not to shabby.

Re: Got killed by an Omni!

Back in the day Chrysler was into turbo 4 bangers in a big way (and the new SRT-4 continues in that tradition). The old Dodge Omni GLH was fast. When ol' Carroll Shelby got hold of it, slapped on an intercooler and other tricks it was a legitimate V8 killer. He called it the GLH-S (S for Shelby). They weighed next to nothing.

Like most turbo cars it took hot rodders about 3 nanoseconds to figure out how to turn up the boost and get loads more power out of it on the street. 13 second times from them were not all that uncommon without digging into the motor. That's probably what you ran into.

Shelby never had anything to do with those turbo cars. Chrysler licensed the name. Its a common mistake. They went right fromt he factory to dealship. They never visited Shelby's shop.

Great Launching Hooptie? I dunno. All I know is that I drove an Omni one time and it leaked oil and tranny fluid really bad. It took me 2 miles to get it from 0 to its top speed of 72 MPH, no joke. I let my friend out and then got it up to 78, lol. Apparently there are some that are damn fast though. Unfreakinbelievable.

The second car Shelby focused on was the Omni. First released in 84, it was called the Omni GLH. The story of its name is loosely as follows: the car was seen as competing with Volkswagen's souped-up Rabbit, the GTI. A Chrysler executive therefore came up with an appropriate name for the hotrod Omni: the Coyote. After all, coyotes eat rabbits, right? Well, this name was rejected. The designers were then asking themselves what they should call it. Shelby offered that it should be called the GLH "because it goes like hell." When the corporate leaders were shocked to hear his proposed name, he answered "who's gonna know?" The moniker stuck all the way to production.

I don't think that reaction time was factored into his E.T. The tracks around here don't figure reaction time in unless they are doing a points race.

Re: Got killed by an Omni!

I called my brother and ask him about some of these fwd 80's dodges and finding out that the turbo charges ran advertised 13.5's and glh ran 13.5 best with shelby claiming 13.2 from the 1800 pound glhs. I am not trying to steal the thread. Just wanted to share the knowledge.

So wait...an LS1 didnt run in the 12s? I thought every one did that bone stock?

[/sarcasm]

Little cars like that sure don't need the power to get down the track fast!
